Transcribed by R.N. Robinson from the Traveller’s Library Edition (Jonathan Cape 1927) this edition of Butler's Selected Essays contains a sketch of his life by Henry Festing Jones. Butler (1835-1902) contributed numerous articles and letters to various periodicals, some of which are reprinted here.
