In spite of the numerous ethical discussions in his other writings, Mill's sole contribution to the fundamental problem of the ethical theory was his small volume Utilitarianism. It first appeared in Fraser's Magazine in 1861 and was reprinted in book form in 1863. It remains one of the most important, controversial, and suggestive works of moral philosophy. In it he puts forward the view that everything we desire becomes a part of happiness. Happiness, then, is a complex phenomenon composed of many parts, including virtue, love of money, power, and fame.
