Selecting the most distinguished American explorers, this book by Samuel Smucker contains narratives of their research and adventures in remote and interesting parts of the globe. Among the five explorers is Elisha Kent Kane: from his youth and early training, oriental wanderings, discoveries and perils. It looks at Kane’s unconquerable enthusiasm while enduring his First and Second Arctic Expeditions and winter life in the arctic regions. It also contains his official report of the Second Grinnell Expedition.
Other explorers include John Ledyard (an account of his youth and early education, and his voyage with Captain Cook around the world), as well as John Charles Fremont’s five expeditions. The book examines Charles Wilkes and his explorations in the Southern Ocean and Chili, Peru and the Paumoto Group along with his researches at Tahiti and Discovery of the Antarctic Continent. Plus Matthew C. Perry’s purpose for his expedition to Japan that includes an interview between Perry and the Imperial Commissioners, and the Establishment of a Commercial Treaty with the Japanese Empire.
Although using the most reliable sources of information accessible for these biographies, in some cases the strictly biographical form has been dropped and portions of lives overlooked so the narrative may be confined to those events that are most important and historical.
