First described in 1813, Bell's palsy remains a 190-year enigma for physicians and, potentially, a physical, mental and financial catastrophe for about 10% - 50% of the victims. It indiscriminately and suddenly strikes some 51,000 American men and women of all ages each year. In its path, many victims are sentenced to eternal facial disfigurement, and physical and emotional suffering. Poor recovery causes distortion, abnormal and involuntary movements of muscles of the face - tic, synkinesis and spasm, epiphora (teary eye), burning eye, blurred vision, collapse of the nasal passages, gustatory lacrimation (eating causes crocodile tear), sweating (Frey's syndrome), and rhinorrhea (eating causes mucus flow in the nose) and poor oral hygiene.
