Gift of Tears is intended for people who find that they have to cope, in the course of their work or of their daily lives, with the grief of others. They may be teachers, nurses, policemen and women, doctors, personnel officers, for example, or just neighbours and friends.
The anguish of another - whether it be for a lost job or the consequences of a brutally sudden bereavement - touches on the whole personality of the individual called upon to help. The main aim of this book is to help carers to contemplate and then confront their own relationship to loss, the better to cope with the loss of others. The authors, who have run many training courses for such varied professions as nursing, probation work, medicine, social work, teaching and the clergy, present loss as a natural event which people can be helped to understand and work through.
Using a unique mixture of theory and counselling practice, Susan Lendrum and Gabrielle Syme bring the practice alive through accessible case-histories and also through exercises which invite the reader to become more involved. They look at the variable circumstances in which losses occur for both adults and children, and discuss historical and cultural variations in attitudes to loss, grieving and death. Particularly helpful to those training to work with loss is a section on developing professional skills, supervision and training, followed by a list of the resources available for carers.
