Democracy and Peace Making surveys the post-war peace settlements of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including the Vienna Congress of 1815, the Treaty of Versailles, the peace settlements of the Second World War, the peace talks after the Korean war and the Paris Peace Accords of 1973.These negotiations have been chosen because of their intrinsic historical importance for what they reveal about the effects of the development of democracy, nationalism and secularisation on the process of peace-making, which had radically altered since the time of the French Revolution. Peace makers had to contend with the contradictions and difficulties caused by the contrast between the new democratic way of negotiation and debate, and the traditional attitudes of pre-1789 European conferences when it was rare for the government of a major European state to be replaced at the victors' insistence, for indemnities to be imposed or for there to be any consideration for the self-determination of peoples involved.
