The Making of Anti-Sexist Men presents the life histories of eight men who have responded positively to feminism and the challenges bought by changes in gender identity and activity since the start of new wave feminism in the late 1960s.The interview data is presented in two ways. The author takes a cross sectional analysis of the sample, bringing out themes distinguishing these men's experiences from those of male chauvinists. He reflects generally on how anti-sexist men are 'made': for instance, lack of identification with 'traditional' father figures, strong mothers, personal association with strong women. Then the eight interviewees tell their life stories in their own words in a way that will appeal to non-specialist readers. The book contributes directly to our understanding of the life experiences of anti-sexist men, will encourage all those opposed to sexism and help reduce the isolation of those who have gone against society's dominant expectations. The Making of Anti-Sexist Men will appeal to all those interested in changing oppressive gender attitudes and social structures, members of anti-sexist men's groups, feminists, lesbians, gay men and undergraduates in gender studies and sociology.
