The performance of gyrotrons has developed rapidly during recent years and they now form very powerful sources of microwave energy at millimetric wavelengths. Much development, both of the detailed theory including multi-mode interaction and of practical devices, has taken place in the major European laboratories. This book is a collection of surveys from these laboratories, with details of the performance achieved at the authors' sites and at further sites world-wide. lt contains much material not previously available, including a review of Russian work on mode competition not formerly published in English, and a survey of recently- developed methods for the transmission of microwave energy at high power levels. Oscillators using both closed resonators and quasi-optical techniques are described in detail, with an outline of the principles of backward-wave oscillators. Chapters are included on the design of electron guns, microwave windows and methods for separation of the electron beam and the high-frequency energy. The book also describes many novel techniques which have been developed for microwave instrumentation at millime ric wavelengths and surveys new methods for conversion between waveguide modes, for transmission and for radiation in high-power microwave systems.
