After the Three Mile Island and the Chernobyl nuclear accidents the possibility that an accident may exceed design basis conditions had to be addressed by novel severe accident research programmes. The definition of emergency plans demand knowledge of the fission products released from the reactor containment building. The Phebus Fission Product facility built at Cadarache is an important milestone in this field. The project is sponsored by the French Commissariat a l'Energy Atomique and the Commission of the European Communities in collaboration with USNRC, NUPEC (Japan), the Candu Owners Group (Canada) and KAERI (South Korea). The main aim is to study fission product release, transport, deposition and resuspension phenomena under representative conditions.
Consequently high burn-up and preconditioned fuel will be used to produce a representative FP source term with respect to the FP inventory and the physio-chemical aspects.
This book is the proceedings of a seminar held by the project sponsors in June 1991. As such it gives a comprehensive overview on the state-of-the-art in Light Water Reactor source term research and a report on the instrumentation of tests and analytical support work. The resulting presentations outlines the contributions and limitations of the Phebus Fission Product Project in solving identified problems and in providing a qualified database for the validation of code systems for the source term estimation during a postulated severe accident.
