Review from E-STREAMS v. 6, no.12 Parasites of Medical Importance is a small, spiral bound text written for those with little or no formal instruction in parasitic diseases. The emphasis is on the parasitic life cycle and host pathology with only limited information on parasitic morphology, taxonomy and pharmacological treatments. The book distinguishes the three types of parasitic symbiosis: commensalism, mutualism and parasitism. Since most parasitic diseases in humans are associated with the rural poor in tropical, developing nations, there is often little interest in the subject of parasitism in medical training or practice in North America. For those who are interested, this is an excellent, practical text with extensive illustrations, charts, graphic photographs and diagrams. The glossary, index and selected references are helpful and quite complete. This book serves a niche audience and is very easy to use and comprehend. The fact that there is very little treatment information is unfortunate but is beyond the scope of the text. Parasites of Medical Importance is recommended for medical and academic libraries that support medical staff serving patients in or from tropical, developing countries. It is also recommended as a personal reference guide for those planning on aiding in warmer climates as regular, relief or mission staff.
