Based on actual events, Between the Battles tells the stories of civilian women working in the Vietnam War. Few in number, and fitting into no category — neither military nor medical, neither local nationals nor US citizens — rules and regulations do not seem to apply to these women. The author faces the horror, brutality and corruption at the heart of the war, but also focuses on what went on between the battles. There is particular focus on the activities of the United States Post Exchange in Vietnam, which at the time of its creation was the world’s third largest retail organisation. Spanning the spectrum of emotional experiences, the author comes to focus on friends and lovers who are drawn closer through their extraordinary circumstances.
