This section represents the second part of the theme issue that Brad Eden edited and
presented in Library Hi Tech, Vol. 23 No. 1, 2005. It continues the examination of how
the technology-rich new library at University of Nevada at Las Vegas changed the way
librarians worked and the way readers interacted with library resources. As Brad said
in his earlier introduction (Eden, 2005):
The second part of this two-part issue (to be published as Vol. 23 No. 3) will provide
technology updates on the automated storage and retrieval (LASR) system and the 3Me
Digital Identification System technology, how public access to government information has
been addressed, recent developments in the Collaborative Learning Center, further
reorganization in the Knowledge Access Management (KAM) Division and the creation of
a new department at the UNLV Libraries named Web and Digitization Services (WDS), how
the Collection Development and Management (CDM) Division and subject librarians have
responded to the tremendous growth in student and faculty populations at UNLV, how the
UNLV Libraries developed their first virtual branch library, musings by the Director of
Special Collections on the place of print culture in a digital library, and recent assessment
activities at the UNLV Libraries.
This kind of in-depth look at the experience of a single institution as it grapples with a
wide range of new technologies gives us all new insight about how our own
institutions might react. Readers interested in earlier issues that focused on other
libraries might want to compare this with the double issue on the University of
Wisconsin Libraries in Library Hi Tech Vol. 16 Nos 3 and 4, 1998.Michael Seadle
