It examines the hermeneutical assumptions of Sufis and their views on text, knowledge and interpretation. Some of the assumptions analyzed include: the view that the Qur'an is multi-layered and open to endless interpretation; the knowledge of the Qur'an's deeper meaning is granted directly from God rather than by study; and, the self is understood to be in constant flux, moving through states and stations which result in different interpretations at different times. The diverse styles found within the Sufi commentaries are explored, ranging from philosophical literary narrative and poetry to musings and popular preaching. Other commentaries from the classical period are also investigated to provide context in understanding Sufi approaches and styles.
