Europe, lakes in Switzerland received the attention of scientists from the mid nineteenth century, with early work concerned with water circulation and chemistry, and then later with the lake sediments themselves. Research by Forel (1886-1892) demonstrated the presence of channels and levies on the Rhone delta in Lake Geneva.
