This volume contains proceedings of the second and third Institute of East European Law anniversary conferences. The results of the first convocation have been published in Law in Eastern Europe under the title: "The Revival of Private Law in Central and Eastern Europe". The themes of the two later meetings were: 'The Impact of the Russian Civil Code on Legal Practice and its Meaning for Comparative Legal Studies' and 'The Public/Private Distinction: The East European Debates at the End of a Decade of Reforms'.Contributors to all three volumes have been practitioners and scholars from Russia as well as elsewhere in the European Legal Space and North America. Subsequent legislative changes or judicial developments may have confirmed or disproven the arguments elaborated by the authors of this work. Nevertheless, the thinking reflected on its pages continues to be valuable for those interested in law in particular and in society, both in Russia as well as in the region, in general. There is no better guide to the future than to have access to the ideas of those who have been keen observers of - and, often, key participants in - landmark reforms.
