HauptbeschreibungNach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg lag Europa in Trümmern. Zahlreiche Städte, Verkehrswege und Industrieanlagen waren zerstört. Die wichtigen Entscheidungen über das Schicksal der Welt fielen nun in Washington und Moskau. Dennoch nahm der in Ost und West gespaltene Kontinent in den folgenden Jahrzehnten eine ganz erstaunliche Entwicklung. Der Wiederaufstieg Europas im Zeitalter des Kalten Krieges ist das zentrale Thema dieses Buches. Europa trat in eine Periode außergewöhnlichen Wohlstands ein und erfuhr in seinem westlichen Teil eine grundlegende gesellschaftliche Demokratisierung. In Westeuropa entstanden der moderne Wohlfahrtsstaat, eine liberale Zivilgesellschaft und stabile Demokratien. Das östliche Europa erlebte eine von oben erzwungene Industrialisierung, Alphabetisierung und soziale Sicherung im Zeichen zum Teil brutaler Diktaturen. In seiner souveränen Synthese arbeitet Hartmut Kaelble die gemeineuropäischen Entwicklungstendenzen der Epoche heraus, gibt der Gesellschafts-, Kultur- und Wirtschaftsgeschichte das gleiche Gewicht wie der politischen Geschichte und bettet die Geschichte Europas in ihren globalen Kontext ein.
Biographische Informationen
Hartmut Kaelble, geb. 1940, war bis zu seiner Emeritierung Professor für Sozialgeschichte an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. Seitdem hat er dort eine Seniorprofessur inne.
