  • Nicolaas van Wijk (1880-1941)by Jan Paul Hinrichs

    Editions Rodopi 2006; US$ 95.20

Nicolaas van Wijk (1880-1941) was the founder of Slavic studies in the Netherlands and one of the greatest Slavists in general. This book describes for the first time how a scholar of the Dutch language, whose etymological dictionary of the Dutch language is still considered the best of its kind, was appointed in 1913 to the newly created Chair in Slavic languages at Leiden University and built up a tremendous reputation for himself in Eastern Europe. Van Wijk’s relations with his famous teacher, the linguist C.C. Uhlenbeck, are followed attentively, as is his postgraduate apprenticeship in Leipzig (1902-1903), where he followed August Leskien’s lectures in Slavic studies. Attention is also paid to the various aspects of Van Wijk’s... more...

  • Tolstoy: A Guide for the Perplexedby Jeff Love

    Continuum International Publishing 2008; US$ 95.00

Count Leo Nikolaevich Tolstoy (1828-1910) is one of the most important writers in the Western tradition. His two great, giant novels, War and Peace and Anna Karenina , are regarded as pinnacles of the genre; they cover an enormous range of basic human experiences with a precision and probing spirit that, in the words of one critic, are simply ‘unmatched by any other writer.’. This guide offers students a clear introduction to Tolstoy’s literary works from his major novels to the shorter novels and texts, including Hadji Murat and ‘ The Death of Ivan Ilyich ’. The guide also covers major themes including sex, death, authority and evil and offers an overview of Tolstoy's religious and philosophical thought. A... more...

  • A Karenina Companionby C. J. G. Turner

    Wilfrid Laurier University Press 2006; US$ 85.00

Although Anna Karenina has been described as “ the European novel” by Frank Leavis, the geographical setting of the novel and, increasingly, its temporal and cultural setting, render it a foreign novel to most readers. A Karenina Companion offers a wealth of information, including a great deal that has previously not been available in English, for the scholarly and literary appreciation of this great novel. Chapter 1 is a biographical introduction and Chapter 2 an examination of the way in which the novel was composed. In Chapter 3 the author brings together Tolstoi’s own substantial comments on his work. Chapter 4 adduces the main differences between the latest edition of the text and what has been the standard... more...

  • Graf Leo Tolstoiby Erich Berneker

    Diplomica Verlag 2011; US$ 10.71

All das schildert Berneker in einem leserfreundlichen, unkomplizierten... more...
