Nobility, Land and Service in Medieval Hungaryby Dr Martyn Rady; Michael Branch; Prof George Kolankiewicz
Palgrave Macmillan Ltd. 2000; US$ 140.00The absence in medieval Hungary of fief-holding and vassalage has often been cited by historians as evidence of Hungary's early 'deviation' from European norms. This new book argues that medieval Hungary was, nevertheless, familiar with many institutions characteristic of noble society in Europe. Contents include the origins of the Hungarian nobility and baronage, lordship and clientage, the role of the noble kindred, conditional landholding, the organization of the frontier, the administration of the counties, and the establishment of representative institutions. more...
War, religion and Court Language in Habsburg Austriaby Karin J. MacHardy
Palgrave Macmillan Ltd. 2002; US$ 140.00This case study of the causes of the Thirty Years' War suggests an alternative framework to that of Absolutism, and views statebuilding as an interactive bargaining process that can engender challenges to political authority. It shows how selective court patronage changed the cultural habits of nobles in education, manners, and tastes, but failed to transform religious identities, which were intimately tied to noble interests. Instead, the confessionalization of patronage deepened divisions within the elite, providing multiple incentives for the formation of an anti-Habsburg alliance among Protestants in 1620. more...

Dollfussby Johannes Messner; John Zmirak; Dr. Alice von Hildebrand
IHS Press 2003; US$ 12.95Introduced in this book is Englebert Dollfuss, the Austrian hero who plotted a course for Austria against Nazism, against Socialism, and against unbridled capitalism until his assassination by the Nazis in 1934. This is the story of the Austrian chancellor who attempted to act as a moral force to bring a divided, bankrupt, and bitter Europe to its senses. It details how he persuaded people of many different political persuasions to follow and support that policy, not through elegant speeches, worthless programs, and empty promises, but through common sense, good humor, overpowering honesty, and tremendous personal sacrifice. more...
Resistance in Austria, 1938-1945by Radomir V. Luza
University of Minnesota Press 1984; US$ 72.00Terror and Tolerationby Paula Sutter Fichtner
Reaktion Books 2008; US$ 45.00Many negative stereotypes of Muslims can be traced to the clashes between the Ottoman Empire and Christian Europe in the Middle Ages. Paula Sutter Fichtner explores here the particular dynamics between the Ottoman and Austrian Habsburg empires and chronicles the evolution of a political relationship that shifted from hatred to understanding. In the fourteenth century, Ottoman armies swept westward across the Danube Valley before confronting the Habsburgs, who ruled central and eastern Europe, and in Terror and Toleration, Fichtner charts the religious and political conflicts that fueled 300 years of war. She reveals how ruling powers in Vienna and the church spread propaganda about Muslims that still lingers today. But the Habsburgs dramatically... more...
Vienna in the Age of Uncertaintyby Deborah R. Coen
University of Chicago Press 2008; US$ 30.00Vienna in the Age of Uncertainty traces the vital and varied roles of science through the story of three generations of the eminent Exner family, whose members included Nobel Prize–winning biologist Karl Frisch, the teachers of Freud and of physicist Erwin Schrödinger, artists of the Vienna Secession, and a leader of Vienna’s women’s movement. Training her critical eye on the Exners through the rise and fall of Austrian liberalism and into the rise of the Third Reich, Deborah R. Coen demonstrates the interdependence of the family’s scientific and domestic lives, exploring the ways in which public notions of rationality, objectivity, and autonomy were formed in the private sphere. Vienna in the Age of Uncertainty... more...
