  • The New Cosmic Onionby Frank Close

    CRC Press 2006; US$ 39.95

Not since Newton's apple has there been a physics phenomenon as deliciously appealing to the masses as Frank Close's Cosmic Onion. Widely embraced by scientists and laypersons alike, the book quickly became an international bestseller, has been translated into seven languages, and propelled the author to become a recognized popular science celebrity around the world. Much has changed since the original publication in 1983, and The New Cosmic Onion was extensively revised and updated to reflect our new view of the universe. Keeping the best contents from the previous work, this new edition includes extensive new material explaining the scientific challenges at the start of this century. more...

    Cambridge University Press 2002; US$ 70.00

This book provides an accessible introduction to the rapidly expanding field of hadronic interactions and the quark-gluon plasma. Covering the basics as well as more advanced material, it is ideal for graduate students as well as researchers already working in this and related fields. more...

  • Measurement of the Top Quark Mass in the Dilepton Final State Using the Matrix Element Methodby Alexander Grohsjean

    Springer 2010; US$ 129.00

The top quark, discovered in 1995 at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, is the heaviest known elementary particle. The precise knowledge of its mass yields important constraints on the mass of the as-yet-undiscovered Higgs boson and allows one to probe for physics beyond the Standard Model. With an excellent adaptation of a novel measurement technique, described and applied here for the first time, the sensitivity to the top quark mass in the dilepton final state at the D0 experiment could be improved by more than 30 percent. Moreover, an extension to the method is presented which allows future measurements to significantly reduce the main limiting systematic uncertainty. more...
