Poincaré Duality Algebras, Macaulay's Dual Systems, and Steenrod Operationsby Dagmar M. Meyer; Larry Smith; B. Bollobas; W. Fulton; A. Katok; F. Kirwan; P. Sarnak; B. Simon
Cambridge University Press 2005; US$ 94.00As the title suggests, in this Tract the authors skilfully bring together several key notions and apply them to problems in invariant theory. A number of remarkable and unexpected interdisciplinary connections are revealed that will interest researchers in the areas of commutative algebra, invariant theory or algebraic topology. more...
Dimension and Extensionsby J.M. Aarts; T. Nishiura
Elsevier 1993; US$ 113.50Two types of seemingly unrelated extension problems are discussed in this book. Their common focus is a long-standing problem of Johannes de Groot, the main conjecture of which was recently resolved. As is true of many important conjectures, a wide range of mathematical investigations had developed, which have been grouped into the two extension problems. The first concerns the extending of spaces, the second concerns extending the theory of dimension by replacing the empty space with other spaces. The problem of de Groot concerned compactifications of spaces by means of an adjunction of a set of minimal dimension. This minimal dimension was called the compactness deficiency of a space. Early success in 1942 lead de Groot to invent a generalization... more...

Dimension Theory in Dynamical Systemsby Yakov B. Pesin
University of Chicago Press 2008; US$ 30.00The principles of symmetry and self-similarity structure nature's most beautiful creations. For example, they are expressed in fractals, famous for their beautiful but complicated geometric structure, which is the subject of study in dimension theory. And in dynamics the presence of invariant fractals often results in unstable "turbulent-like" motions and is associated with "chaotic" behavior. In this book, Yakov Pesin introduces a new area of research that has recently appeared in the interface between dimension theory and the theory of dynamical systems. Focusing on invariant fractals and their influence on stochastic properties of systems, Pesin provides a comprehensive and systematic treatment of modern dimension theory in dynamical systems,... more...
Set-Valued Analysisby Jean-Pierre Aubin; Helene Frankowska
Springer 2008; US$ 49.95Presents an introduction to multivalued or set-valued analysis. This title is suitable for graduate students and mathematicians. more...
Selectorsby John E. Jayne; C. Ambrose Rogers
Princeton University Press 2002; US$ 72.50Though the search for good selectors dates back to the early twentieth century, selectors play an increasingly important role in current research. This book is the first to assemble the scattered literature into a coherent and elegant presentation of what is known and proven about selectors--and what remains to be found. The authors focus on selection theorems that are related to the axiom of choice, particularly selectors of small Borel or Baire classes. After examining some of the relevant work of Michael and Kuratowski & Ryll-Nardzewski and presenting background material, the text constructs selectors obtained as limits of functions that are constant on the sets of certain partitions of metric spaces. These include selection theorems... more...
Dimension theoryby Ryszard Engelking
Elsevier Science & Technology 2000; US$ 250.00This book provides a comprehensive introduction to modern global variational theory on fibred spaces. It is based on differentiation and integration theory of differential forms on smooth manifolds, and on the concepts of global analysis and geometry such as jet prolongations of manifolds, mappings, and Lie groups. The book will be invaluable for researchers and PhD students in differential geometry, global analysis, differential equations on manifolds, and mathematical physics, and for the readers who wish to undertake further rigorous study in this broad interdisciplinary field. Featured topics - Analysis on manifolds - Differential forms on jet spaces - Global variational functionals - Euler-Lagrange mapping - Helmholtz form and the... more...
