Estuarine oceanography

  • Salinity and Tides in Alluvial Estuariesby H.H.G. Savenije

    Elsevier 2006; US$ 133.00

The book describes an integrated theory that links estuary shape to tidal hydraulics, tidal mixing and salt intrusion. The shape of an alluvial estuary is characterised by exponentially varying width and the absence of bottom slope. This topography is closely related to tidal parameters, hydraulic parameters and parameters that describe 1-dimensional mixing and salt intrusion. Starting from the fundamental equations for conservation of mass and momentum, analytical equations are derived that relate the topography to tidal parameters (tidal excursion, phase lag, tidal damping, tidal amplification), wave celerity, lateral and vertical mixing and salt intrusion. The book presents a review of the state of the art, a comprehensive theoretical... more...

  • Estuarine and Coastal Fine Sediment Dynamicsby Jerome Maa; Lawrence P. Sanford; David Schoellhamer

    Elsevier 2006; US$ 250.00

This volume is the product of the International Conference on Cohesive Sediment Transport (INTERCOH 2003) held at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, U.S.A., during October 1-4, 2003. The topics included in this monograph range from basic research on cohesive sediment dynamics to practical applications. Also included with this book is a database that contains all experimental results as well as a comparison of numerical simulation results supported by the COSINUS project. * Provides fundamental knowledge of the dynamics of cohesive sediments * Presents practical applications of new finds on sedimentary processes * Includes valuable ready-for-use data more...

  • Estuariesby Jack Hardisty

    John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 2008; US$ 84.95

Estuaries are complex and fascinating natural environments, where constantly changing water depths generate rapidly reversing currents and transport vast quantities of salt, heat, and sediment on a daily basis. Estuaries: Monitoring and Modeling the Physical System examines these processes, offering extensive information about the geological evolution of estuaries, and details of bathymetry, tides, currents, salt and heat, and suspended sediment. By carefully building a working computer model which accurately emulates the complexities inherent in estuaries, students learn quickly to model the tides and currents, and then to build and test salinity, temperature, and suspended sediment modules. The book is strongly supported by a website at... more...

  • Thin Layer Chromatography in Chiral Separations and Analysisby Teresa Kowalska

    CRC Press 2007; US$ 169.95

Investigation and control of chirality ranks among the most difficult separation tasks. This book presents information on this important field. It also discusses the problem of chirality in general and the technical possibilities of carrying out enantiomer separations in detail. more...

  • Coastal and Estuarine Fine Sediment Processesby W.H. McAnally; A.J. Mehta

    Elsevier 2001; US$ 225.00

The INTERCOH series of conferences bring together the world's leading researchers and practitioners in cohesive sediment transport processes to share recent insights. This book presents papers that examine the spectrum of fine sediment transport related science and engineering, including the basics and applications of flocculation, settling, deposition, and erosion, advanced numerical models used in engineering practice, and applications to mud flats and harbor siltation. more...

  • Muddy Coasts of the Worldby T. Healy; Y. Wang; J.-A. Healy

    Elsevier 2002; US$ 233.00

The SCOR (Scientific Committee on Ocean Research of ICSU) Working Group 106 was tasked with reviewing the geomorphic, sedimentary and oceanographic dynamics of muddy costs, assessing the impact of sea level rise on muddy coasts, especially in estuaries, and to recommend future research pathways relating to muddy coasts. This book addresses these questions and includes chapters on the research issues of muddy coasts, the definition of muddy coasts, sea level rise effects on muddy coasts, fundamental dynamic processes effecting muddy coast formation, the role of mangrove and salt marsh vegetation, bio-geochemistry of muddy coast deposits, storm surge effects on muddy coasts, human impacts on muddy coasts, and a detailed geographical review of... more...

  • Muddy Coast Dynamics and Resource Managementby B.W. Flemming; M.T. Delafontaine; G. Liebezeit

    Elsevier 2000; US$ 225.00

Muddy coasts are land-sea transitional environments commonly found along low-energy shorelines which either receive large annual supplies of muddy sediments, or where unconsolidated muddy deposits are being eroded by wave action. In providing 21 case studies in different parts of the world this book provides an up-to-date review of the state of the art in muddy coast research. Issues dealing with hydrodynamics and suspended matter transport, erosion, deposition, and sediment budgets on tidal flats, primary production, nutrient fluxes and mineralization in lagoons are treated in a multi disciplinary manner. Most articles deal with issues which are of relevance with respect to global warming and future sea level rise. more...
