  • Voices of the American Westby Corinne Platt; Meredith Ogilby

    Fulcrum Publishing 2009; US$ 29.95

This documentary-style collection of photographs and narratives profiles a wide range of prominent figures of the West as they engage in candid discussions about the region and its identity. A diverse group of visionary men and women, they may differ in politics but remain united in their belief that the West requires inspired action if it is going to endure challenges posed by political, cultural, and environmental pressures. Allowing those on each side of the issues to speak freely, this important work tackles such topics as education, recreation, immigration, ranching, alternative energy, wildlife habitat protection, oil and gas extraction, urban development, and water conservation. Exemplifying photography and journalism at its best, Voices... more...

  • City with a Chanceby Frank A Aukofer

    Marquette University Press 2007; US$ 20.00

Frank Aukofer walks us by the hand through the... more...

  • Distinguished Serviceby Thomas C Reeves

    Marquette University Press 2006; US$ 45.00

Walter J. Kohler, Jr. was one of Wisconsin's best governors. Elected three times, he played a role in the election of Dwight D. Eisenhower to the presidency in 1952 and was known to be an administration favorite. Kohler's challenge was to unite moderate Republicans, who backed Ike, with a Far Right that fervently supported Senator Joe McCarthy. His inability to please both wings of the Republican Party eventually cost him an election race for the United States Senate. In 1957 he was unexpectedly defeated by William Proxmire, a long-time Democratic Party rival and indefatigable campaigner. But Kohler was more than a politician. His biography involves the highly unusual story of the Kohler Company in Wisconsin, site, at the same time,... more...
