Applications in Industry
By: Unknown
Published by: Elsevier Science

Volume I contains a brief review of adsorption history and its development for practical purposes up until now. It also presents some important information on adsorbents and catalysts as well as on the methods of their characterization. The part of this volume dealing with practical industrial applications includes chapters presenting advanced technical tools for high capacity adsorption separation of liquid and gas mixtures, development of new adsorbents for removal of hazardous contaminants from combustion flue gases and wastewaters, degasification of coal seams and fabrication of inorganic membranes and their applications. A comprehensive review is also included on contemporary utility of self-assembled monolayers, adsorption proteins and their role in modern industry, adsorption methods in technology of optical fibre glasses, sol-gel technology, solid desiccant dehumidification systems, etc. The articles give both the scientific backgrounds of the phenomena discussed and emphasize their practical aspects. The chapters give not only brief current knowledge about the studied problems, but are also a source of topical literature on the subject. A comprehensive bibliography on adsorption principles, design data and adsorbent materials for industrial applications for the period 1967-1997 concludes the book. more...

Applications of Physiological Ecology to Forest Management
By: Landsberg, J. J.; Gower, S. T.; Roy, Jacques
Published by: Academic Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)

Forest management is a complex process that now incorporates information obtained from many sources. It is increasingly obvious that the physiological status of the trees in a forest has a dramatic impact on the likely success of any particular management strategy. Indeed, models described in this book that deal with forest productivity and sustainability require physiological information. This information can only be obtained from an understanding of the basic biological mechanisms and processes that contribute to individual tree growth. This valuable book illustrates that physiological ecology is a fundamental element of proficient forest management. more...

Applying Strategic Environmental Assessment
By: OECD Publishing
Published by: Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)

Millennium Development Goal 7 calls for ensuring environmental sustainability by integrating the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programmes. Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) is one of the main tools available to achieve this integration. The Paris Declaration on Aid Effectiveness, agreed by over one hundred donors and developing countries in March 2005, commits donors and partner countries jointly to “develop and apply common approaches for Strategic Environmental Assessment at the sector and national levels”. This Guidance volume explains the benefits of using SEA in development co-operation and sets out key steps for its application based on recent experiences. Twelve different entry points are identified for the practical application of SEA in development co-operation. For each entry point, the text provides a guidance note: a checklist of questions and hands-on case studies. Evaluation and capacity development for SEA processes are also addressed. Even though the publication is aimed primarily at professionals working in development agencies and developing country governments, it will also be of value to other policy analysts and planners. It includes a preface by Rt. Hon. Hilary Benn MP, Secretary of State for International Development, UK, Kemal Dervis, Administrator, UNDP, and Richard Manning, Chair of the OECD Development Assistance Committee. The OECD DAC Task Team on Strategic Environmental Assessment, which prepared this guidance, received the 2006 Institutional Award of the International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA). more...

New developments in analytical chemistry and in related disciplines, which have contributed to archaeological research since the first edition of the book was published, are dealt with in this edition, which also includes:.:. ;. Updated information on the study of the nature, age, and provenance of ancient materials. ;. New sections on organic, biological and genetic studies. ;. Glossary. ;. Extensive bibliography. The book is intended primarily for archaeologists, physical anthropologists and students of archaeology and physical anthropology, but will also be of use to conservators, curators, and art historians. Architecture and the Urban Environment
By: Thomas, Derek
Published by: Architectural Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)

This well illustrated text forms a critical appraisal of the place and direction of architecture and urban design in a new world order at the start of the 21st century. The book defines architectural and environmental goals for the New Age by analysing recent contemporary work for its responsiveness to important social and environmental issues and comparing it to successful precedents in architecture. It argues that this new sustainable approach to architecture should be recognised as a new development of mainstream architectural history. This practical guide illustrates current social and natural resource issues to aid architects in their approach to future design. Environmental economics is presented as a potential bridge over the divide between the expectations of the business sector and the concerns of environmental lobbies. Through examples and case studies, an accessible analysis of carefully researched data, drawn from primary sources over four continents, allows the author to outline the current urgency for architects and urban designers to respond with real commitment to current and future changing contexts. This book expresses a holistic vision and proposes a value system in response to the diagnosis. It includes: sound architectural and environmental ethics; end user involvement in the design process and technological advances aimed at sustainable resource use. Includes international case studies from Europe, North America, the Developing world including South Africa, South America and Central Asia. more...
