The Politics of Water Resource Development in India
By: Wood, John R
Published by: SAGE India
This book is about the politics of water resource development and management in. India, with special reference to the Narmada river waters dispute. The author. draws on a wealth of studies on Narmada as also his own research to analyse the. controversy from the perspective of a political scientist. The author analyses three aspects of the conflict over developing the waters. of the Narmada:. - The politics of the inter-state river water dispute over Narmada waters in. the context of Indian centre-state and inter-state relationships and the constitutional. and legal mechanisms for resolving disputes among riparian states. - The Narmada upstream-downstream politics implicit in the battle between downstream. Gujarat and Rajasthan versus upstream Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. - The much-publicized struggle between those for and others against the construction. of the gigantic Sardar Sarovar dam. Given the highly contentious nature of these struggles, the author objectively. highlights how and why the outcomes of such struggles have largely depended. on the realities of power.

Pollution of Lakes and Rivers
By: Smol, John P.
Published by: Wiley-Blackwell
Now in its second edition, Pollution of Lakes and Rivers provides essential insights into present-day water quality problems from an international perspective.:.; Explains simply and effectively how lake sediments can be used to reconstruct pollution history.; Includes over 200 additional references and a new chapter on recent climatic change and its effects on water quality and quantity.; Tackles present-day water quality problems from an international perspective.; Previously published by Hodder Arnold. PowerPoint slides of the artwork from the book are available from: http://biology.queensu.ca/~pearl/textbook.htm. Reviews:. "This is a very well-written and wide-ranging volume that is both instructive and topical. It is likely to prove useful as an introduction to the general area, a reference source and for teaching purposes." ( The Holocene , November 2008). "If you thought that paleolimnology was just mud, pollen, and diatoms then you will likely be both struck by the complexity of this field of research and grateful that John Smol, FRSC, has described it so clearly and broadly. Simply put, the second edition is an excellent book." ( Journal of Phycology, 2008). “This is a useful text. It provides a good level of detail so that the beginner in this area can appreciate what palaeolimnology can (and cannot) achieve. It goes beyond the simple introduction to provide a detailed understanding of how techniques can be applied ... This is a different take on the usual pollution text and would be of great use to those wishing to understand more from sedimentary records.” Taken from the British Ecological Society’s Teaching Ecology website . "John Smol has extensive experience in this field of paleoenvironmental research which he combines well with his excellent written communication skills to produce a text that is easy to read but also thought provoking." (Quaternary Science Reviews, 2009).

Rainfall-runoff Modelling In Gauged And Ungauged Catchments
By: Wagener, Thorsten; Wheater, Howard S; Gupta, Hoshin V
Published by: Imperial College Press
This important monograph is based on the results of a study on the identification of conceptual lumped rainfall-runoff models for gauged and ungauged catchments. The task of model identification remains difficult despite decades of research. A detailed problem analysis and an extensive review form the basis for the development of a Matlab® modelling toolkit consisting of two components: a Rainfall-Runoff Modelling Toolbox (RRMT) and a Monte Carlo Analysis Toolbox (MCAT). These are subsequently applied to study the tasks of model identification and evaluation. A novel dynamic identifiability approach has been developed for the gauged catchment case. The theory underlying the application of rainfall-runoff models for predictions in ungauged catchments is studied, problems are highlighted and promising ways to move forward are investigated. Modelling frameworks for both gauged and ungauged cases are developed. This book presents the first extensive treatment of rainfall-runoff model identification in gauged and ungauged catchments.

Regionalization of Watersheds
By: Rao, A.R.; Srinivas, V.V.
Published by: Springer
Design of water control structures, reservoir management, economic evaluation of flood protection projects, land use planning and management, flood insurance assessment, and other projects rely on knowledge of magnitude and frequency of floods. Often, estimation of floods is not easy because of lack of flood records at the target sites. Regional flood frequency analysis (RFFA) alleviates this problem by utilizing flood records pooled from other watersheds, which are similar to the watershed of the target site in flood characteristics. Clustering techniques are used to identify group(s) of watersheds which have similar flood characteristics. This book is a comprehensive reference on how to use these techniques for RFFA and is the first of its kind. It provides a detailed account of several recently developed clustering techniques, including those based on fuzzy set theory and artificial neural networks. It also documents research findings on application of clustering techniques to RFFA that remain scattered in various hydrology and water resources journals. The optimal number of groups defined in an area is based on cluster validation measures and L-moment based homogeneity tests. These form the bases to check the regions for homogeneity. The subjectivity involved and the effort needed to identify homogeneous groups of watersheds with conventional approaches are greatly reduced by using efficient clustering techniques discussed in this book. Furthermore, better flood estimates with smaller confidence intervals are obtained by analysis of data from homogeneous watersheds. Consequently, the problem of over- or under-designing by using these flood estimates is reduced. Thisleads to optimal economic design of structures. The advantages of better regionalization of watersheds and their utility are entering into hydrologic practice. Audience: This book will be of interest to researchers in stochastic hydrology, practitioners in hydrology and graduate students.

Rethinking Water Management
By: Figueres, Caroline (ed.); Rockstrom, Johan (ed.); Tortajada, Cecilia (ed.)
Published by: Earthscan
If water resources are to be distributed efficiently equitably and cost-effectively in this rapidly changing world then it is clear that current water management practices are no longer feasible. Innovative approaches are required to meet the increasing water demands of a growing world population and economy and the needs of the ecosystems supporting them. New approaches have to be employed at global national and local levels. In Rethinking Water Management a new generation of water experts from around the world examine the critical challenges confronting the water profession including rainwater and groundwater management recycling and reuse water rights transboundary access to water and financing of water. They offer important new perspectives on the use management and conservation of fresh water in terms of both quantity and quality for the domestic agricultural and industrial sectors and show how a new set of paradigms can be applied to successfully manage water for the future. Caroline Figures is Head of the Urban Infrastructure Department at UNESCO-IHE Water Education Institute in The Netherlands. Cecilia Tortajada is Vice President of the Third World Centre for Water Management in Mexico and Vice President-elect of the International Water Resources Association. Johan Rockstrm is Water Resources Expert at UNESCO-IHE.
