Blue Revolution
By: Calder, Ian R.
Published by: Earthscan
'Blue Revolution upturns some environmental applecarts - not for the hell of it but so we can manage our environment better.' Fred Pearce New Scientist This updated and revised edition of The Blue Revolution provides further evidence of the need to integrate land management decision-making into the process of integrated water resources management. It presents the key issues involved in finding the balance between the competing demands for land and water: for food and other forms of economic production for sustaining livelihoods and for conservation amenity recreation and the requirements of the environment. It also advocates the means and methodologies for addressing them. A new chapter 'Policies Power and Perversity' describes the perverse outcomes that can result from present often myth-based land and water policies which do not consider these land and water interactions. New research and case studies involving ILWRM concepts are presented for the Panama Canal catchments and in relation to afforestation proposals for the UK Midlands.

Economic and Ecological Risk Assessment
By: Bruins, Randall J. F.; Heberling, Matthew T.
Published by: CRC Press
With contributions from economists, ecologists, and government agency professionals, this book provides a multidisciplinary approach to environmental decision making at a watershed level. It integrates ecological risk assessment (ERA) and economic analysis to improve environmental management in a diversity of watersheds. It includes different points of view concerning the extent to which each study achieves an ideal framework for the integration of ERA and economic analysis. The practical focus on real-world decisions includes the effects of urban development, mining, and water withdrawal for agriculture and also evaluates the socioeconomic and institutional dimensions of decision making.

Estimating the Value of Water-Use Efficiency in the Intermountain West
By: Groves, David G.; Griffin, James; Hajiamiri, Sara
Published by: RAND Corporation
Evaluating the cost-effectiveness of water-efficiency programs can be difficult, because not all the benefits are easily quantified. This report presents an economic framework based on two tools from the California Urban Water Conservation Council to estimate the avoided costs and environmental benefits of an agency's efficiency programs. The report evaluates the benefits of Denver Water efficiency programs and uses an exploratory modeling approach to accommodate the significant uncertainty in such estimations. The results of this study suggest that the inclusion of long-run avoided costs and environmental benefits is critical to fully recognizing the value of water-use efficiency programs. The authors find that evaluating only the short-run avoided costs leads to the conclusion that many water-efficiency projects already a part of Denver Waters 10-year conservation plan are not cost-effective. When long-run avoided costs and environmental and recreational benefits were factored in, all but two Denver Water programs were estimated to be cost-effective. The timing of projected water savings from efficiency programs is also critical. Water savings from programs that concentrate savings during summer months, when water is scarcer, should be valued higher than saving from programs that lead to more uniform water savings throughout the year, because these water savings reduce peak water needs.
