Handicapping for Bettor or Worse
By: Lindley, John
Published by: Eclipse Press

Every handicapper is looking for an edge. Handicapping for Bettor or Worse: A Fresh Perspective to Betting the Races helps horseplayers create their own luck by teaching them to develop their own approach. Author and well-known handicapper John Lindley discusses the methods used by such handicapping stalwarts as Andrew Beyer and Len Ragozin. He focuses on what readers can learn from their methods but also analyzes the limitations and advises players on how to form a more comprehensive approach. Lindley touts the power of observation and advantages of being familiar with the home track and the horses and trainers who race there. He discusses the importance of track biases, the importance of keeping up with medication and equipment changes, and the advantage of knowing who is reputable in the claiming game. As a racehorse owner, Lindley shows readers how official past performances and figures sometimes fail to take into account all the factors that affect a horse’s performance. Handicapping for Bettor or Worse includes an at-length discussion about incorporating value in their wagering which will help all handicappers improve their skills. more...

Affirmed and Alydar
By: Capps, Timothy T.
Published by: Eclipse Press

The greatest rivalry in modern racing history began with little fanfare on June 15, 1977. The more experienced Affirmed defeated Alydar, who was making his racing debut in the Youthful Stakes at Belmont Park. In nine subsequent meetings, Affirmed got the better of Alydar six times, often by just inches. Their meetings, especially during the Triple Crown season of 1978, became the stuff of racing lore. Affirmed claimed the Triple Crown, but Alydar tested him to the limits each time in stirring stretch drives that left onlookers limp. Indeed, many racing historians consider their Belmont Stakes to be the greatest race of the 20th century. To tell one’s story is to tell the other’s, so closely intertwined are the lives of Affirmed and Alydar. Author Tim Capps, who witnessed many of the Affirmed-Alydar races, chronicles their early years, first encounters, and epic clashes. He also tells the stories of the people who raised, trained, and rode these titans. Affirmed was bred in Florida by financier Louis Wolfson, trained by the legendary Laz Barrera, and ridden by Steve Cauthen, known as “The Kid.” Alydar entered life on the historic grounds of Calumet Farm in Lexington, Kentucky, the last great horse of the old Wright regime. Trained by the young John Veitch, Alydar would have been a Triple Crown winner in any other year. As a stallion, Alydar surpassed his nemesis although Affirmed found surprising success as a sire of turf horses. more...

The Agua Caliente Story
By: Beltran, David Jimenez
Published by: Eclipse Press

South-of-the-border racetrack Agua Caliente combined the elegance of an exclusive resort and the excitement of a popular Hollywood nightclub. Hollywood stars flocked to the racetrack. Horse racing stars appeared there, too, among them jockeys George Woolf, Eddie Arcaro, Bill Shoemaker, and John Longden. The great Australian champion Phar Lap made his only North American start there, and Seabiscuit, Round Table, and other top horses raced there. Agua Caliente was not without its troubles, enduring shut downs, fires, and floods. But during its forty-year history, Agua Caliente would give racing fans many fond memories of romantic Old Mexico. Author David Jimenez Beltran feels a special connection to old Agua Caliente and that fondness is evident as he takes the reader on a journey through a fascinating piece of American and Mexican history. Numerous historical photographs -- many from the author's collection -- complement Beltran's words. more...

Assault
By: Boyd, Eva Jolene
Published by: Eclipse Press

For a nation recovering from years of war, a little chestnut colt named Assault gave people hope and inspiration as he beat the odds to become the 1946 Triple Crown winner. Born in the midst of World War II, the aptly named Assault showed the same courage and fortitude as the American servicemen fighting overseas. As a baby, Assault injured his foot so severely that he was almost destroyed. But Assault managed to recover, and although he forever walked with a limp, when he ran, no trace of his injury existed. Instead he flew with speed and grace, earning the nickname “the clubfooted comet.” Raised on the vast expanse of King Ranch in South Texas, Assault became the pride and joy of the Lone Star State with his racing heroics. Author Eva Jolene Boyd, a native Texan, remembers seeing Assault at King Ranch when she was young, and she proudly tells the story of this courageous legend. more...

At the Wire
By: Bowen, Edward L.
Published by: Eclipse Press

Dominating victories, great duels, and astounding rallies make up some of horse racing's greatest moments. Award-winning writer Edward L. Bowen captures these in At The Wire, a compilation of twenty-seven races plus Breeders' Cup highlights that have earned a solid place in America's turf history. Bowen tells the unforgettable tale of the 1973 Belmont Stakes, in which national hero Secretariat ended a twenty-five-year drought of Triple Crown winners with a spectacular thirty-one-length victory. At The Wire revives the enormity of the triple dead heat in the 1944 Carter Handicap. And Bowen pays homage to the running battle between Affirmed and Alydar and its 1978 Triple Crown conclusion in the Belmont Stakes. Bowen writes of outstanding horses at their best in fierce competition and of their time and place in American racing. more...
