Harvested Forages
By: Horrocks, Rodney Dwain; Valentine, John F.
Published by: Academic Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)
Harvested Forages deals with the subject of food for domestic animal feeding. Such food is called "forage" and includes things like alfalfa and other plants usually referred to as "hay." Topics include the ways that this forage is produced, how it is harvested, and ways that it should be stored. Other issues that are dealt with include various criteria and measurement procedures for assessing forage nutritive quality, potential health hazards associated with particular plants and plant toxins, and various issues of plant growth, pest control, and soil fertility--among other topics. This book is essential for any institution with a strong program in range sciences, animal sciences, animal feeding and nutrition, and related programs.

Hydrological and Biological Responses to Forest Practices
By: Stednick, John D. (ed.)
Published by: Springer
My original idea to reactivate the Alsea streamflow monitoring program was part of a sabbatical leave supported by the National Council for Air and Stream Improvement, Inc. (NCASI) and the Department of Forest Engineering, Oregon State University (OSU). The camaraderie of George Ice and Ben Stout (NCASI) in particular made for an enjoyable leave and I want to acknowledge the late Hank Froehlich and Jim Kiser (OSU) for our discussions on what does it all mean. My plan was to finish this book at OSU, but that opportunity was not presented. Nonetheless, the book took longer to complete than I originally thought. The interest by other investigators and new support prompted me to not let the perfect be the enemy of the good. It was my final decisions that went to press, thus, any errors or omissions are my responsibility not authors or reviewers. This book does not completely cover all the lessons learned. Even with the conveniences of modern science, data loggers fail, water level floats leak, and water quality samples disappear between the field and the lab. Those are the lessons that have to be experienced to be learned, or shared over a beer. This compilation may not recognize all the people who contributed to efforts in the Alsea watersheds but any oversight on my part was not intended. A note of appreciation goes to James D. Hall at OSU for his willingness to check the details and find the nits, especially in the references. It was special to have one of the original investigators be part of this effort. Thanks to C.A. Troendle for our continued discussions on forest hydrology. Thanks to my family, especially Susan.

Mathematical Modeling for System Analysis in Agricultural Research
By: Vohnout, K.
Published by: Elsevier Science
This book provides a clear picture of the use of applied mathematics as a tool for improving the accuracy of agricultural research. For decades, statistics has been regarded as the fundamental tool of the scientific method. With new breakthroughs in computers and computer software, it has become feasible and necessary to improve the traditional approach in agricultural research by including additional mathematical modeling procedures. The difficulty with the use of mathematics for agricultural scientists is that most courses in applied mathematics have been designed for engineering students. This publication is written by a professional in animal science targeting professionals in the biological, namely agricultural and animal scientists and graduate students in agricultural and animal sciences. The only prerequisite for the reader to understand the topics of this book is an introduction to college algebra, calculus and statistics. This is a manual of procedures for the mathematical modeling of agricultural systems and for the design and analyses of experimental data and experimental tests. It is a step-by-step guide for mathematical modeling of agricultural systems, starting with the statement of the research problem and up to implementing the project and running system experiments.

Nitrogen in the Environment
By: Follett, R.F.; Hatfield, J.L.
Published by: Elsevier Science
Nitrogen in the Environment: Sources, Problems, and Management is the first volume to provide a holistic perspective and comprehensive treatment of nitrogen from field, to ecosystem, to treatment of urban and rural drinking water supplies, while also including a historical overview, human health impacts and policy considerations. It provides a worldwide perspective on nitrogen and agriculture. Nitrogen is one of the most critical elements required in agricultural systems for the production of crops for feed, food and fiber. The ever-increasing world population requires increasing use of nitrogen in agriculture to supply human needs for dietary protein. Worldwide demand for nitrogen will increase as a direct response to increasing population. Strategies and perspectives are considered to improve nitrogen-use efficiency. Issues of nitrogen in crop and human nutrition, and transport and transformations along the continuum from farm field to ground water, watersheds, streams, rivers, and coastal marine environments are discussed. Described are aerial transport of nitrogen from livestock and agricultural systems and the potential for deposition and impacts. The current status of nitrogen in the environment in selected terrestrial and coastal environments and crop and forest ecosystems and development of emerging technologies to minimize nitrogen impacts on the environment are addressed. The nitrogen cycle provides a framework for assessing broad scale or even global strategies to improve nitrogen use efficiency. Growing human populations are the driving force that requires increased nitrogen inputs. These increasing inputs into the food-production system directly result in increased livestock and human-excretory nitrogen contribution into the environment. The scope of this book is diverse, covering a range of topics and issues from furthering our understanding of nitrogen in the environment to policy considerations at both farm and national scales.
