Nitrogen-fixing Actinorhizal Symbioses
By: Pawlowski, Katharina (ed.); Newton, William E. (ed.)
Published by: Springer

Includes chapters that deal with the aspects of the symbiosis and both symbionts and their ecological role and use. This work contains other chapters that tackle the global distribution of different actinorhizal plants and their microsymbionts and how this impacts the question of co-evolution of the micro and macrosymbionts. more...

Nitrogen-fixing Leguminous Symbioses
By: James, Euan K. (ed.); Sprent, Janet I. (ed.); Dilworth, Michael J. (ed.); Newton, William E. (ed.)
Published by: Springer

Nodules produced on legume roots by root-nodule bacteria provide the major nitrogenous input into natural and agricultural systems worldwide. This book provides analysis of what is known about this symbiosis, its origins, the process of nodule formation and development, and the biochemistry and genetics of nodular nitrogen fixation. more...

Nuclear Receptor Coregulators
By: Litwack, Gerald (ed.)
Published by: Academic Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)

First published in 1943, Vitamins and Hormones is the longest-running serial published by Academic Press. In the early days of the Serial, the subjects of vitamins and hormones were quite distinct. The Editorial Board now reflects expertise in the field of hormone action, vitamin action, X-ray crystal structure, physiology, and enzyme mechanisms. Under the capable and qualified editorial leadership of Dr. Gerald Litwack, Vitamins and Hormones continues to publish cutting-edge reviews of interest to endocrinologists, biochemists, nutritionists, pharmacologists, cell biologists, and molecular biologists. Others interested in the structure and function of biologically active molecules like hormones and vitamins will, as always, turn to this series for comprehensive reviews by leading contributors to this and related disciplines. more...

Nucleic Acids in Innate Immunity
By: Ishii, Ken J.
Published by: CRC

Offering insight into areas of immunology, this book explains the roles of nucleic acids in immunity, describing the mechanism of discrimination based on pattern-recognition receptors (PRRs). It discusses how these PRRs recognize and respond to pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) by activating specific signaling pathways. more...

Origin and Evolution of Telomeres
By: Nosek, Jozef (ed.); Tomáska, L'ubomír (ed.)
Published by: Landes Bioscience

Linear chromosomes represent an evolutionary innovation associated with the origin of eukaryotic cells. This book describes how linear chromosomes and primordial pathways for maintaining their terminal structures, telomeres, emerged in early eukaryotes. Telomeres, derived from the Greek meaning terminal part, were first described by Hermann Muller in 1938. Telomeres are specialized structures that comprise the ends of linear chromosomes in eukaryotes. Linearity is crucial for chromosome pairing during meiosis and sexual reproduction. Inspired by Dobzhansky's dictum that "nothing in biology makes sense except in the light of evolution", this book brings together information about the origin and evolution of telomeres, their functions and the consequences of eukaryotic linearity which is an essential prerequisite of meiotic cell division and sexual reproduction. Selective pressure toward linearization must have been associated with the emergence of robust and redundant mechanisms for the maintenance of telomeres. These pathways comprise a molecular clock involved in cell senescence, carcinogenesis and immortalization. more...
