Learn Basic Sight Words - Book 2
By: Smith, Dayle
Published by: Curriculum Concepts

Learn Basic Sight Words. Book 1 was so popular we have added another book to this series. Book 2 introduces a further 21 basic sight words at the next degree of difficulty to the 24 introduced in Book 1. Book 2 follows the same sequence of activities as Book 1 using large and small motor activities and sentence reading and writing activities with contextual clues to introduce each word. The activities used repeat for each word so that independence is quickly achieved and students can complete the activity on their own as a follow-up activity to instruction. Activities for each word are:. - tracing over a large model of the word. - copying over the word and writing it independently. - cutting out the muddled letters of the word and sticking them in the correct order. - selecting the correct word from a selection of words. - completing a sentence (use basic vocab and picture clues for understanding) with the word and reading the sentences. - cutting out the muddled words of one of the sentences and putting it together in the correct order. These activities are ideal for building into a book that the children can keep and read and re read and take home to share. The importance of being able to retain and instantly recognize the basic sight words to a good start in reading cannot be overstated. This resource will supplement classroom teaching and develop independence and success. more...

Learning to Listen - Book 1
By: Mills, Tania
Published by: Curriculum Concepts

Good listening skills are vital to learning and to everyday life. Educational research shows a direct link between the ability to listen effectively, and measurable intelligence. If we improve listening skill, we improve IQ. Yet though we often complain about students’ listening skills, do we apply focused teaching to improve them? The Learning To Listen series increases student ability to sustain retentive listening over time. Each book consists of 20 appealing, high-interest stories to be read to students. After listening to each story, students complete a related listening comprehension activity. These require students to retain specific information from the story to answer given questions. Details requiring recall relate to such details as colour, order of events, sounds, sights and characters discussed in the story. Activities can be completed as a class, in groups or individually. Initially, as written or aural clues, students are given particular information to listen for before the story is read. As their listening ability develops, memory cues are reduced. Creative expression extension activities accompany each story. Don’t just talk about how students should learn to listen. Do something about it. more...

Listening for Information - Book 1
By: Beals, Graeme; Beals, Jane
Published by: Curriculum Concepts

Actively listening for information is an essential skill for all students and is one that needs to be developed and practiced - it doesn't just happen. The exercises in this three book series require the listener to actively listen for information in each story and show that they have understood and processed this information by adding information onto the picture that accompanies each story. Students may need to add color to the picture or stripes to a sweater or they may need to add into the picture an item that is referred to in the story but not included in the picture. Some of the information is referred to in the story directly eg Sally had brown hair, other information is woven into the text and requires students to really listening carefully to identify and process it. For each picture (24 per book)  there are two stories or set of instructions at two levels of difficulty so each picture can be used twice. The exercises in each book increase in difficulty through the book and through the series. These exercises can also be used for reading comprehension - instead of the story being read to the students the students can read the story themselves and complete the picture. These exercises will make your students skillful at listening and 'hearing' information actively. Get started today. more...
