Citizen Engineer
By: Douglas, David; Papadopoulos, Greg; Boutelle, John
Published by: Prentice Hall
“It’s terrific. This new book does an outstanding job of filling in the knowledge of topics that simply aren’t touched upon. . . . This is exactly the sort of book that engineers should read and discuss.”. – John L. Hennessy, president, Stanford University. . “ Citizen Engineer is the bible for the new era of socially responsible engineering. All engineers concerned with the impact of their work must read this book.”. – Hal Abelson, professor of computer science and engineering, MIT. . “This accessible and brilliant book should be required of every citizen, and especially, the new citizen lawmakers we call engineers.”. – Lawrence Lessig, professor, Stanford Law School, and founder, Creative Commons. . Being an engineer today means being far more than an engineer. You need to consider not only the design requirements of your projects but the full impact of your work–from an ecological perspective, an intellectual property perspective, a business perspective, and a sociological perspective. And you must coordinate your efforts with many other engineers, sometimes hundreds of them. In short, we’ve entered an age that demands socially responsible engineering on a whole new scale: The era of the Citizen Engineer. . This engaging and thought-provoking book, written by computer industry luminaries Greg Papadopoulos and David Douglas, focuses on two topics that are becoming vitally important in the day-to-day work of engineers today: eco engineering and intellectual property (IP). Citizen Engineer also examines how and why the world of engineering has changed, and provides practical advice to help engineers of all types master the new era of engineering and start thinking like Citizen Engineers.

Low Energy Cooling for Sustainable Buildings
By: Eicker, Ursula
Published by: Wiley
This long-awaited reference guide provides a complete overview of low energy cooling systems for buildings, covering a wide range of existing and emerging sustainable energy technologies in one comprehensive volume. An excellent data source on cooling performance, such as building loads or solar thermal chiller efficiencies, it is essential reading for building services and renewable energy engineers and researchers covering sustainable design. The book is unique in including a large set of experimental results from years of monitoring actual building and energy plants, as well as detailed laboratory and simulation analyses. These demonstrate which systems really work in buildings, what the real costs are and how operation can be optimized – crucial information for planners, builders and architects to gain confidence in applying new technologies in the building sector. Inside you will find valuable insights into:.:.; the energy demand of residential and office buildings;.; facades and summer performance of buildings;.; passive cooling strategies;.; geothermal cooling;.; active thermal cooling technologies, including absorption cooling, desiccant cooling and new developments in low power chillers;.; sustainable building operation using simulation. A Practical Approach to Water Conservation for Commercial and Industrial Facilities
By: Seneviratne, Mohan
Published by: Elsevier Science
Industry and commerce use vast amounts of water and in some parts of the world water is becoming a scarce commodity. We need to take more care in our future use of water, and this book is a 'best practice' manual for industrial and commercial users world-wide. It offers a practical account of the measures which can be taken to re-educate industrial and commercial users in the techniques of water saving and re-use anywhere in the world. The principles are covered in detail and supported by examples from specific industries and commercial operations. Author Mohan Seneviratne is Manager of Sydney Water's 'Every Drop Counts Business Program', which won the prestigious 2006 Stockholm Industry Water Award in recognition of how the utility is working in partnership with business, industry and government to help ensure the long-term sustainability of Sydneys water supply.

Acid Rain
By: Watt Committee on Energy Publications,
Published by: Spon Press
What is loosely described as acid rain is not a new phenomenon. The burning of coal and other fossil fuels
must have always resulted in the production of sulphur dioxide, and, where the combustion temperatures are
high, of oxides of nitrogen. These may be present in various stages of oxidation and are often referred to as
simply SOx and NOx. The Clean Air Act 1956 with its limitations on the burning of raw coal in urban areas
has virtually eliminated smog in British cities but has not directly reduced the SOx emissions.
It is only during the last decade or so that Acid Rain has become a topic of discussion vying with nuclear
energy in its emotive power. Initially attention was mainly concerned with the alleged effect of these gases
and the acids formed therefrom on lakes and rivers in Scandinavia. This concern was soon followed by reports
of serious damage to, for instance, the Black Forest, and, more locally, to lakes in the Galloway area and
damage in other parts of Scotland. In the case of these and many other examples, suggestions, still to be
verified, have been made about the probable origin of the pollutants.
