Advances in the Study of Behavior
By: Slater, Peter J.B.; Milinski, Manfred
Published by: Academic Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)
Advances in the Study of Behavior presents its first thematic volume, focusing on the physiological and behavioral mechanisms underlying parental care. The book discusses parental care both within and across taxa, with coverage of invertebrates and early vertebrates, fishes, amphibia, reptiles, mammals, birds, and nonhuman primates. A running theme throughout the chapters shows that parental care is anchored to the ecology, reproductive physiology, and embryonic development of a species. Coverage also includes mechanisms of parental care, including analysis of the stimuli that parents respond to and how parental care is initiated, maintained, and terminated. Individual differences within species are also explored, examining stable differences in maternal style, how they arise, and the consequences for both mother and infant.

Analyzing Animal Societies
By: Whitehead, Hal
Published by: The University of Chicago Press
Animals lead rich social lives. They care for one another, compete for resources, and mate. Within a society, social relationships may be simple or complex and usually vary considerably, both between different groups of individuals and over time. These social systems are fundamental to biological organization, and animal societies are central to studies of behavioral and evolutionary biology. But how do we study animal societies? How do we take observations of animals fighting, grooming, or forming groups and produce a realistic description or model of their societies?. Analyzing Animal Societies presents a conceptual framework for analyzing social behavior and demonstrates how to put this framework into practice by collecting suitable data on the interactions and associations of individuals so that relationships can be described, and, from these, models can be derived. In addition to presenting the tools, Hal Whitehead illustrates their applicability using a wide range of real data on a variety of animal speciesfrom bats and chimps to dolphins and birds. The techniques that Whitehead describes will be profitably adopted by scientists working with primates, cetaceans, birds, and ungulates, but the tools can be used to study societies of invertebrates, amphibians, and even humans. Analyzing Animal Societies will become a standard reference for those studying vertebrate social behavior and will give to these studies the kind of quality standard already in use in other areas of the life sciences.

Animal Behavior
By: Ridley, Mark
Published by: Wiley-Blackwell
This classic textbook is a concise introductory guide to the subject of animal behavior. The book is organized by first building the four-cornered foundations of the subject, then moving higher. In an extremely well-organized progression, the student is lead to an understanding of the essential topics, explained in logical self-contained units. Each chapter ends with suggestions for further reading. In this second edition, the coverage of mechanisms of behavior is much expanded, as is the material on evolution and natural selection. The chapter on development includes much of the new work on learning and memory, especially song-learning in birds. Indeed throughout the book, examples are drawn from recent ground-breaking research.: The latest edition of the textbook of choice in animal behaviour; Extremely well illustrated and including many classic photos by Niko Tinbergen; Uniquely well suited as an introductory text - designed for student use with a clear and logical organization founded on self-contained units

Animal Cognition in Nature
By: Balda, Russell P.; Pepperberg, Irene M.; Kamil, A. C.
Published by: Academic Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)
In this book, the editors bring together results from studies on all kinds of animals to show how thinking on many behaviors as truly cognitive processes can help us to understand the biology involved. Taking ideas and observations from the while range of research into animal behavior leads to unexpected and stimulating ideas. A space is created where the work of field ecologists, evolutionary ecologists and experimental psychologists can interact and contribute to a greater understanding of complex animal behavior, and to the development of a new and coherent field of study.
