Advances in Research and Development
By: Francombe, Maurice H.; Vossen, John L.
Published by: Academic Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)

Physics of Thin Films is one of the longest running continuing series in thin film science, consisting of twenty volumes since 1963. The series contains quality studies of the properties of various thinfilms materials and systems. In order to be able to reflect the development of today's science and to cover all modern aspects of thin films, the series, starting with Volume 20, has moved beyond the basic physics of thin films. It now addresses the most important aspects of both inorganic and organic thin films, in both their theoretical as well as technological aspects. Therefore, in order to reflect the modern technology-oriented problems, the title has been slightly modified from Physics of Thin Films to Thin Films . more...

Advances in the Bonded Composite Repair of Metallic Aircraft Structure
By: Jones, R.; Baker, A. (ed.); Rose, F. (ed.)
Published by: Elsevier Science

The availability of efficient and cost-effective technologies to repair or extend the life of aging military airframes is becoming a critical requirement in most countries around the world, as new aircraft becoming prohibitively expensive and defence budgets shrink. To a lesser extent a similar situation is arising with civil aircraft, with falling revenues and the high cost of replacement aircraft. This book looks at repair/reinforcement technology, which is based on the use of adhesively bonded fibre composite patches or doublers and can provide cost-effective life extension in many situations. From the scientific and engineering viewpoint, whilst simple in concept, this technology can be quite challenging particularly when used to repair primary structure. This is due to it being based on interrelated inputs from the fields of aircraft design, solid mechanics, fibre composites, structural adhesive bonding, fracture mechanics and metal fatigue. The technologies of non-destructive inspection (NDI) and, more recently smart materials, are also included. Operational issues are equally critical, including airworthiness certification, application technology (including health and safety issues), and training. Including contributions from leading experts in Canada, UK, USA and Australia, this book discusses most of these issues and the latest developments. Most importantly, it contains real histories of application of this technology to both military and civil aircraft. more...

Ageing and the Glass Transition
By: Henkel, Malte (ed.); Pleimling, Michel (ed.); Sanctuary, Roland (ed.)
Published by: Springer

Understanding cooperative phenomena far from equilibrium is one of fascinating challenges of present-day many-body physics. Glassy behaviour and the physical ageing process of such materials are paradigmatic examples. The present volume, primarily intended as introduction and reference for postgraduate students and nonspecialist researchers from related fields, collects six extensive lectures addressing selected experimental and theoretical issues in the field of glassy systems. Lecture 1 gives an introduction and overview of the time-dependent behaviour of magnetic spin glasses. Lecture 2 is devoted to an in-depth discussion on the nature of the thermal glass-transition in structural glasses. Lecture 3 examines the glassy behaviour of granular systems. Lecture 4 gives a thorough introduction to the techniques and applications of Monte-Carlo simulations and the analysis of the resulting data through scaling methods. Lecture 5 introduces the zero-range-process concept as simple but subtle model to describe a range of static and dynamic properties of glassy systems. Lecture 6 shows how familiar RG methods for equilibrium systems can be extended to systems far from equilibrium. more...

Aircraft system safety
By: Kritzinger, D E
Published by: Woodhead Publishing Limited

Demonstrating safety for the application of ever increasingly complex technologies is always a formidable task. In the event of an accident society want someone to blame. How would your records face up to legal scrutiny and how would you be able to demonstrate that you have taken reasonable care as a professional engineer/manager should you be faced with a court appearance? The problem is that many system engineers do not have the appropriate training; the required safety approaches, tools and techniques; and their managers do not know when and how they may be applied and appropriately resourced. This book aims to provide a basic skill-set for both safety practitioners and their managers by defining stakeholder (civil, military and legal) expectations and showing how these expectations can be efficiently accomplished and managed throughout the product lifecycle (i.e from concept design to product disposal). more...

The alloy tree
By: Farrar, C
Published by: Woodhead Publishing Limited

The alloy tree is a user-friendly, logical guide to the major metal alloys and their variants. Introductory chapters present a diagrammatic representation of a main alloy route map, which categorises each specific type of alloy. New types of metals that are all members of the same family can be developed, by adding different alloys together. Chemical formulas are given for each individual metal alloy. Data tables with information on designation (definition), description, background, chemical composition, properties, microstructure and applications are given for each alloy group. This book is an easy to use guide for the non-specialist, enabling the reader to grasp the fundamentals of alloy properties and uses, assisting with selecting the right alloy for a particular purpose. more...
