Carbon Alloys
By: Yasuda, E.; Ingaki, M.; Kaneko, K.
Published by: Elsevier Science

In recent years the Japanese have funded a comprehensive study of carbon materials which incorporate other elements including boron, nitrogen and fluorine, hence the title of the project "Carbon Alloys". Coined in 1992, the phrase "Carbon Alloys" can be applied to those materials mainly composed of carbon materials in multi-component systems. The carbon atoms of each component have a physical and/or chemical interactive relationship with other atoms or compounds. The carbon atoms of the components may have different hybrid bonding orbitals to create quite different carbon components. Eiichi Yasuda and his team consider the definition of Carbon Alloys, present the results of the Carbon Alloys projects, describe typical Carbon Alloys and their uses, discuss recent techniques for their characterization, and finally, illustrate potential applications and future developments for Carbon Alloy science. The book contains over thirty chapters on these studies from as many researchers. The most modern of techniques, particularly in the area of spectroscopy, were used as diagnostic tools, and many of these are applicable to pure carbons also. Porosity in carbons received considerable attention. more...

Carbon Nanotubes
By: Jorio, Ado (ed.); Dresselhaus, Mildred S. (ed.); Dresselhaus, Gene (ed.)
Published by: Springer

The carbon nanotubes field has evolved substantially since the publication of the bestseller ???Carbon Nanotubes: Synthesis, Structure, Properties and Applications???. The present volume builds on the generic aspects of the aforementioned book, which emphasizes the fundamentals, with the new volume emphasizing areas that have grown rapidly since the first volume, guiding future directions where research is needed and highlighting applications. The volume also includes an emphasis on areas like graphene, other carbon-like and other tube-like materials because these fields are likely to affect and influence developments in nanotubes in the next 5 years. more...

Cascade Separation of Powders
By: M Barsky; E Barsky
Published by: Cambridge International Science Publishing

The authors describe the theoretical work and practical results obtained in recent years in the area of classification of powders in moving flows. The promising nature of the cascade classification method is stressed. Mathematical models of regular, combined and irregular cascades are described. Mathematical fundamentals of the structural, dynamic and kinetics models of the process are presented. A new approach to optimising the classification processes, based on the classification curves and information theory, is explained. more...

Casting Aluminum Alloys
By: Zolotorevsky, Vadim S; Belov, Nikolai A; Glazoff, Michael V
Published by: Elsevier Science

This monograph provides a broad overview of the principles of design of advanced casting aluminium alloys. These materials continue to play a very important role in a number of fields, e.g. the automotive industry, machine engineering, marine construction, etc. The authors show that the development of novel casting aluminium alloys is impossible without understanding the corresponding phase diagrams, both equilibrium and non-equilibrium, and deep relationships existing among alloy thermodynamics, phase equilibria, and alloy microstructure. An important feature is the systematic review of such technological properties as castability, tendency to pre-solidification cracking, molten metal fluidity, and porosity, and the construction of “processing maps” or “windows” for materials with the best casting properties. Physical and mechanical properties of casting alloys are analyzed using different mathematical models, thus making it easier to draw systematic conclusions about the alloy properties and their changes. more...

Catalysis by Microporous Materials
By: Beyer, H.K.; Karge, H.G.; Kiricsi, I.
Published by: Elsevier Science

ZEOCAT '95 is the eleventh in the series of symposia devoted to special fields of zeolite chemistry. Six plenary lectures, forty oral and forty-two poster presentations were included in the program. The accepted papers cover every aspect of catalysis on microporous materials. A significant number of the contributions describe the synthesis, modification, instrumental and chemical characterisation of zeolites and other micro- and mesoporous materials. Catalytic reactions involve hydrocarbon cracking, nucleophilic aromatic substitution, methanol to hydrocarbon conversion, hydration of acetylene, various alkylation reactions, redox transformations, Claisen rearrangement, etc. more...

Cavity Polaritons
By: Kavokin, Alexey; Malpuech, Guillaume
Published by: Academic Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)

Microcavities form a base for fabrication of opto-electronic devices of XXI century, in particular polariton lasers based on a new physical principle with respect to conventional lasers proposed by Einstein in 1917. This book overviews a theory of the major phenomena linked microcavities and exciton-polaritons. more...

Cavity-Enhanced Spectroscopies
By: van Zee, Roger; Looney, J. Patrick
Published by: Academic Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)

"Cavity-Enhanced Spectroscopy" discusses the use of optical resonators and lasers to make sensitive spectroscopic measurements. This volume is written by the researcchers who pioneered these methods. The book reviews both the theory and practice behind these spectroscopic tools and discusses the scientific discoveries uncovered by these techniques. It begins with a chapter on the use of optical resonators for frequency stabilization of lasers, which is followed by in-depth chapters discussing cavity ring-down spectroscopy, frequency-modulated, cavity-enhanced spectroscopy, intracavity spectroscopies, microresonators and cavity-enhanced comb filters. This book is aimed towards a reader with a background in optics and spectroscopy, but who is unfamiliar with the methods discussed in the book. more...
