Breakup of Liquid Sheets and Jets
By: Lin, S. P.
Published by: Cambridge University Press

The theme of this book is an exposition of what we know about the physics underlying the onset of instability in liquid sheets and jets. Wave motion and breakup phenomena subsequent to the onset of instability are also carefully explained. Physical concepts are established through rigorous mathematics, accurate numerical analyses and comparison of theory with experiment. more...

CALPHAD (Calculation of Phase Diagrams)
By: Saunders, N.; Miodownik, A.P.
Published by: Pergamon (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)

This monograph acts as a benchmark to current achievements in the field of Computer Coupling of Phase Diagrams and Thermochemistry, often called CALPHAD which is an acronym for Computer CAL culation of PHA se D iagrams. It also acts as a guide to both the basic background of the subject area and the cutting edge of the topic, combining comprehensive discussions of the underlying physical principles of the CALPHAD method with detailed descriptions of their application to real complex multi-component materials. Approaches which combine both thermodynamic and kinetic models to interpret non-equilibrium phase transformations are also reviewed. more...

Carbon Alloys
By: Yasuda, E.; Ingaki, M.; Kaneko, K.
Published by: Elsevier Science

In recent years the Japanese have funded a comprehensive study of carbon materials which incorporate other elements including boron, nitrogen and fluorine, hence the title of the project "Carbon Alloys". Coined in 1992, the phrase "Carbon Alloys" can be applied to those materials mainly composed of carbon materials in multi-component systems. The carbon atoms of each component have a physical and/or chemical interactive relationship with other atoms or compounds. The carbon atoms of the components may have different hybrid bonding orbitals to create quite different carbon components. Eiichi Yasuda and his team consider the definition of Carbon Alloys, present the results of the Carbon Alloys projects, describe typical Carbon Alloys and their uses, discuss recent techniques for their characterization, and finally, illustrate potential applications and future developments for Carbon Alloy science. The book contains over thirty chapters on these studies from as many researchers. The most modern of techniques, particularly in the area of spectroscopy, were used as diagnostic tools, and many of these are applicable to pure carbons also. Porosity in carbons received considerable attention. more...

Carbon Nanotubes
By: Jorio, Ado (ed.); Dresselhaus, Mildred S. (ed.); Dresselhaus, Gene (ed.)
Published by: Springer

The carbon nanotubes field has evolved substantially since the publication of the bestseller ???Carbon Nanotubes: Synthesis, Structure, Properties and Applications???. The present volume builds on the generic aspects of the aforementioned book, which emphasizes the fundamentals, with the new volume emphasizing areas that have grown rapidly since the first volume, guiding future directions where research is needed and highlighting applications. The volume also includes an emphasis on areas like graphene, other carbon-like and other tube-like materials because these fields are likely to affect and influence developments in nanotubes in the next 5 years. more...

Carbon Nanotubes
By: Saito, Susumo; Zettl, Alex
Published by: Elsevier Science

This volume is devoted to mostly to nanotubes, unique synthetic nanoscale quantum systems whose physical properties are often singular (i.e. record-setting). Nanotubes can be formed from a myriad of atomic or molecular species, the only requirement apparently being that the host material or “wall fabric” be configurable as a layered or sheet-like structure. Nanotubes with sp2-bonded atoms such as carbon, or boron together with nitrogen, are the champions of extreme mechanical strength, electrical response (either highly conducting or highly insulating), and thermal conductance. Carbon nanotubes can be easily produced by a variety of synthesis techniques, and for this reason they are the most studied nanotubes, both experimentally and theoretically. Boron nitride nanotubes are much more difficult to produce and only limited experimental characterization data exist. Indeed, for boron nitride nanotubes, theory is well ahead of experiment. For these reasons this volume deals largely with carbon nanotubes. Conceptually, the andquot;building blockandquot; for a carbon nanotube is a single sheet of graphite, called graphene. Recently, it has become possible to experimentally isolate such single sheets (either on a substrate or suspended). This capability has in turn fueled many new theoretical and experimental studies of graphene itself. It is therefore fitting that this volume contains also a chapter devoted to graphene. more...

Cascade Separation of Powders
By: M Barsky; E Barsky
Published by: Cambridge International Science Publishing

The authors describe the theoretical work and practical results obtained in recent years in the area of classification of powders in moving flows. The promising nature of the cascade classification method is stressed. Mathematical models of regular, combined and irregular cascades are described. Mathematical fundamentals of the structural, dynamic and kinetics models of the process are presented. A new approach to optimising the classification processes, based on the classification curves and information theory, is explained. more...
