Gladsongs and Gatherings
By: Wade, Stephen
Published by: Liverpool University Press

With the ‘Liverpool Scene’, poetry registered nationally as a popular art form arguably for the first time. Since then, poetry appears to have contracted once more to its metropolitan, literary heartland. So what happened to the ‘Mersey sound’? Gladsongs and Gatherings examines this question through the ideas and reflections of poets and poetry readers. The book includes interviews with the famous 60s trio, and places their experience alongside that of contemporary poets who continue to find the city a rich source of inspiration. more...

Julius Caesar
By: MobileReference
Published by: MobileReference.com

This is an electronic edition of the complete book complemented by author biography. This booktable of contents linked to every act and scene. *****************. Julius Caesar is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written in 1599. It portrays the conspiracy against the Roman dictator of the same name, his assassination and its aftermath. It is one of several Roman plays that he wrote, based on true events from Roman history, which also include Coriolanus and Antony and Cleopatra. Although the title of the play is Julius Caesar, Caesar is not the central character in its action; he appears in only three scenes, and is killed at the beginning of the third act. The protagonist of the play is Marcus Brutus, and the central psychological drama is his struggle between the conflicting demands of honour, patriotism, and friendship. The play reflected the general anxiety of England over succession of leadership. At the time of its creation and first performance, Queen Elizabeth, a strong ruler, was elderly and had refused to name a successor, leading to worries that a civil war similar to that of Rome might break out after her death. — Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. . more...

This is an electronic edition of the complete book complemented by author biography. This booktable of contents linked to every act and scene. *****************. Henry IV, Part 1 is a history play by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written no later than 1597. It is the second of Shakespeare''s tetralogy that deals with the successive reigns of Richard II, Henry IV (2 plays), and Henry V. Henry IV, Part 1 depicts a span of history that begins with Hotspur''s battle at Homildon against the Douglas late in 1402 and ends with the defeat of the rebels at Shrewsbury in the middle of 1403. From the start it has been an extremely popular play both with the public and the critics. Henry IV, Part 2 is a history play by William Shakespeare, believed written between 1596 and 1599. It is the third part of a tetralogy, preceded by Richard II and Henry IV, Part 1 and succeeded by Henry V. — Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. . more...

King Lear
By: MobileReference
Published by: MobileReference.com

This is an electronic edition of the complete book complemented by author biography. This booktable of contents linked to every act and scene. *****************. King Lear is a tragedy by William Shakespeare, believed to have been written between 1603 and 1606, and is considered one of his greatest works. The play is based on the legend of King Leir of Britain. It has been widely adapted for stage and screen, with the part of Lear being played by many of the world''s most accomplished actors. There are two distinct versions of the play: The True Chronicle of the History of the Life and Death of King Lear and His Three Daughters, which appeared in quarto in 1608, and The Tragedy of King Lear, which appeared in the First Folio in 1623, a more theatrical version. The two texts are commonly printed in a conflated version, although many modern editors have argued that each version has its individual integrity. After the Restoration the play was often modified by theatre practitioners who disliked its nihilistic flavour, but since World War II it has come to be regarded as one of Shakespeare''s supreme achievements. The tragedy is particularly noted for its probing observations on the nature of human suffering and kinship. — Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. . more...

King Richard III
By: MobileReference
Published by: MobileReference.com

This is an electronic edition of the complete book complemented by author biography. This booktable of contents linked to every act and scene. *****************. Richard III is a drama in five acts by William Shakespeare. The play is an unflattering depiction of the short reign of Richard III of England, and is believed to have been written in approximately 1591. The play is sometimes classified as a tragedy (as in the earliest quarto); but it more correctly belongs to the histories, as classified in the First Folio. It picks up the story from Henry VI, Part III and concludes the historical series that stretches back to Richard II. After Hamlet, it is Shakespeare''s second longest play and is the longest of the First Folio, whose version of Hamlet is shorter than the Quarto version. The length is generally seen as a drawback, for which reason it is rarely performed unabridged. It is often shortened by cutting peripheral characters. Another reason for editing is that Shakespeare assumed that his audiences would be familiar with the Henry VI plays, and frequently made indirect references to events in them, such as Richard''s murder of Henry VI or the defeat of Henry''s queen Margaret. Nowadays the previous plays are less well-known, so the character of Margaret is often cut and extra lines are sometimes invented or added from the trilogy to explain the characters'' relationships. — Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. . more...
