The Selected Poetry and Prose of Vittorio Sereni
By: Sereni, Vittorio; Perryman, Marcus (trans.); Robinson, Peter (trans.)
Published by: The University of Chicago Press
The Beach (La Spiaggia). Theyve all gone away . the voice was blathering down the receiver. Then, knowingly: Theyll not return . But today. on this stretch of beach never visited before. those sunlight patches . . . Signals. of theirs, who hadn't left at all?. And when you turn theyre quiet, as if nothing. Whats being wasted from day to day. is not the dead, but its those. patches of the nonexistent, lime or ashes. ready to become light and movement. Dont. be in doubt, the seas strength assails me . speak they will. Viewed as one of the most important Italian poets of the last century, Vittorio Sereni (191383) wrote with a historical sweep unlike that of any of his contemporaries. A poet of both personal and political responsibility, he wrote of life under fascism, military defeat and imprisonment, the Italian economic miracle and cold war in Europe, and the resurgence of extreme right-wing politics, as well as the roles played by love and friendship in the survival of humanity. An equally esteemed prose writer, his pieces on the contradictions of war and the complex purpose of poetry and the arts in society are seminal contributions to Italian literature. The first substantial translation of Serenis work published anywhere in the world, The Selected Poetry and Prose of Vittorio Sereni is a unique guide to this classic twentieth-century poet. This bilingual edition collects the most representative poems from Serenis oeuvre, as well as a selection of prose works that extends the themes of his poetry. The book also contains examples of Serenis short fiction, published here in English for the first time. With a full chronology, commentary, bibliography, and learned introduction by distinguished British poet and scholar Peter Robinson, The Selected Poetry and Prose of Vittorio Sereni is the only authorized rendering of Serenis verse in English.

Selected Poetry of Francisco de Quevedo
By: de Quevedo, Francisco; Johnson, Christopher (trans.)
Published by: The University of Chicago Press
Francisco de Quevedo (15801645), one of the greatest poets of the Spanish Golden Age, was the master of the baroque style known as conceptismo, a complex form of expression fueled by elaborate conceits and constant wordplay as well as ethical and philosophical concerns. Although scattered translations of his works have appeared in English, there is currently no comprehensive collection available that samples each of the genres in which Quevedo excelledmetaphysical and moral poetry, grave elegies and moving epitaphs, amorous sonnets and melancholic psalms, playful romances and profane burlesques. In this book, Christopher Johnson gathers together a generous selection of forty-six poemsin bilingual Spanish-English format on facing pagesthat highlights the range of Quevedos technical expertise and themes. Johnsons ingenious solutions to rendering the difficult seventeenth-century Spanish into poetic English will be invaluable to students and scholars of European history, literature, and translation, as well as poetry lovers wishing to reacquaint themselves with an old master.

Selected Writings
By: Navarre, Marguerite; Cholakian, Rouben (trans.); Skemp, Mary (trans.)
Published by: The University of Chicago Press
Marguerite de Navarre (14921549) was the sister and wife to kings and a pivotal influence in sixteenth-century France. An astute politician and diligent humanist, she was a champion of gender equality and the evangelical reform movement, which recognized that the clergy was more concerned with maintaining the churchs power than ministering to the faithful. As the years passed and the glitter of life at court waned, however, Marguerite came to realize her true vocation: writing. Selected Writings brings together a representative sampling of Marguerites varied writings, most of it never before translated into English, enabling Anglophone readers to enjoy the full breadth of her work for the first time. From verse letters and fables to mythological-pastoral tales, from spiritual songs to a selection of novellas from the Heptameron, the wide range of works included here will reveal Marguerite de Navarre to be one of the most important writersmale or femaleof sixteenth-century France.

Simon Dach (16051659)
By: Walter, Axel E. (ed.)
Published by: Max Niemeyer Verlag
The papers in this volume deal with central aspects of Simon Dachs complete poetic works. One focus is on intensive textual interpretations, which take up topical research issues and apply their methodology to selected texts by Dach. In the process, particular attention is paid to Dachs Modern Latin poetry, which has hitherto been neglected by research. This volume opens up many texts for research for the first time. Dachs pro-loco disputation, the invitation to his inaugural lecture and numerous poems in German and Latin are edited with commentaries. A second focus is on aspects of the history of the aftermath and reception of his works. This volume provides the most comprehensive academic study of Simon Dach yet published, and is the first to give an overall impression of his poetic works and his influence on later writers.

Spiritual Sonnets
By: de Coignard, Gabrielle; Gregg, Melanie E. (trans.)
Published by: The University of Chicago Press
Born into a wealthy family in Toulouse, Gabrielle de Coignard (ca. 1550-86) married a prominent statesman in 1570. Widowed three years later, with two young daughters to raise, Coignard turned to writing devotional verse to help her cope with her practical and spiritual struggles. Spiritual Sonnets presents the first English translation of 129 of Coignard's highly autobiographical poems, giving us a startlingly intimate view into the life and mind of this Renaissance woman. The sonnets are all written "in the shadow of the Cross" and include elegies, penitential lyrics, Biblical meditations, and more. Rich with emotion, Coignard's poems reveal anguished moments of loneliness and grief as well as ecstatic experiences of mystical union. They also reveal her mastery of sixteenth-century literary conventions and spiritual traditions. This edition, printed in bilingual format with Melanie E. Gregg's translations facing the French originals, will be welcomed by teachers and students of poetry, French literature, women's studies, and religious and Renaissance studies.

The Whole Difference
By: Von Hofmannsthal, Hugo; McClatchy, J. D. (ed.)
Published by: Princeton University Press
Hugo von Hofmannsthal is one of the modern era's most important writers, but his fame as Richard Strauss's pioneering collaborator on such operas as Der Rosenkavalier and Die Frau ohne Schatten has obscured his other remarkable writings: his precocious lyric poetry, inventive short fiction, keen essays, and visionary plays. The Whole Difference, which includes new translations as well as classic ones long out of print, is a fresh introduction to the enormous range of this extraordinary artist, and the most comprehensive collection of Hofmannsthal's writings in English. Selected and edited by the poet and librettist J. D. McClatchy, this collection includes early lyric poems; short prose works, including "The Tale of Night Six Hundred and Seventy-Two," "A Tale of the Cavalry," and the famous "Letter of Lord Chandos"; two full-length plays, The Difficult Man and The Tower; as well as the first act of The Cavalier of the Rose. From the glittering salons of imperial Vienna to the bloodied ruins of Europe after the Great War, the landscape of Hofmannsthal's world stretches across the extremes of experience. This collection reflects those extremes, including both the sparkling social comedy of "the difficult man" Hans Karl, so sensitive that he cannot choose between the two women he loves, and the haunting fictional letter to Francis Bacon in which Lord Chandos explains why he can no longer write. Complete with an introduction by McClatchy, this collection reveals an artist whose unusual subtlety and depth will enthrall readers.
