Computational Acoustics of Noise Propagation in Fluids
By: Marburg, Steffen (ed.); Nolte, Bodo (ed.)
Published by: Springer

The book provides a survey of numerical methods for acoustics, namely the finite element method (FEM) and the boundary element method (BEM). In particular, the FEM is often used for interior problems whereas BEM is quite popular for exterior problems. This book shows that both methods can be effectively used for many other cases, FEM even for open domains and BEM for closed ones. Emphasis of the book is put on numerical aspects and on treatment of the exterior problem in acoustics, i.e. noise radiation. Numerical aspects cover the use of different types of elements, discussing the rule of using a fixed number of elements per wavelength and iterative solution techniques for the arising system of equations. Fast boundary element techniques and multi-domain BEM are discussed in this context too. Exterior problems in the context of finite elements will survey different techniques of treatment such as infinite elements, absorbing boundary conditions and perfectly matched layers. Further, the fields of frequency-range solutions by Lanczos via Pade approximation and modal solutions are covered. In the context of BEM, the so-called irregular frequencies are considered. This is followed by considering sound propagation above an impedance plane, formulation of spectral elements, a method for treatment of thin radiators and radiation modes. Both chapters conclude with sections on fluid-structure interaction, on inverse problems and on energy methods, respectively. Finally, the book discusses future challenges in the field of numerical methods in acoustics. more...

Computational Methods In Sciences And Engineering, Proceedings Of The International Conference (iccmse 2003)
By: Simos, T. E. (ed.)
Published by: World Scientific

In the past few decades, many significant insights have been gained into several areas of computational methods in sciences and engineering. New problems and methodologies have appeared in some areas of sciences and engineering. There is always a need in these fields for the advancement of information exchange. The aim of this book is to facilitate the sharing of ideas, problems and methodologies between computational scientists and engineers in several disciplines. Extended abstracts of papers on the recent advances regarding computational methods in sciences and engineering are provided. The book briefly describes new methods in numerical analysis, computational mathematics, computational and theoretical physics, computational and theoretical chemistry, computational biology, computational mechanics, computational engineering, computational medicine, high performance computing, etc. more...

Computational Probability
By: Drew, John H.; Evans, Diane L.; Glen, Andrew G.; Leemis, Lawrence M.
Published by: Springer

Computational probability encompasses data structures and algorithms that have emerged over the past decade that allow researchers and students to focus on a new class of stochastic problems. COMPUTATIONAL PROBABILITY is the first book that examines and presents these computational methods in a systematic manner. The techniques described here address problems that require exact probability calculations, many of which have been considered intractable in the past. The first chapter introduces computational probability analysis, followed by a chapter on the Maple computer algebra system. The third chapter begins the description of APPL, the probability modeling language created by the authors. The book ends with three applications-based chapters that emphasize applications in survival analysis and stochastic simulation. The algorithmic material associated with continuous random variables is presented separately from the material for discrete random variables. Four sample algorithms, which are implemented in APPL, are presented in detail: transformations of continuous random variables, products of independent continuous random variables, sums of independent discrete random variables, and order statistics drawn from discrete populations. The APPL computational modeling language gives the field of probability a strong software resource to use for non-trivial problems and is available at no cost from the authors. APPL is currently being used in applications as wide-ranging as electric power revenue forecasting, analyzing cortical spike trains, and studying the supersonic expansion of hydrogen molecules. Requests for the software have come from fields as diverse as marketresearch, pathology, neurophysiology, statistics, engineering, psychology, physics, medicine, and chemistry. more...

Computer Solution of Large Linear Systems Studies in Mathematics and its Applications Volume 28 (SMIA)
By: Unknown
Published by: North Holland

The Symposium was the latest in a long-running and well-respected series in this key area of IFAC's technical interest. Its aim was to address the control aspects of those industrial, economic, social and environmental systems whose characteristics are high dimensionality, non-linearity and uncertainty, associated with a multitude of structural forms, with intense and time critical information exchange and efficient co-ordination. The Symposium covered all major aspects of large scale, complex systems including methodological aspects, technological solutions and practical applications. more...

Concentration Inequalities and Model Selection
By: Massart, Pascal; Picard, Jean (ed.)
Published by: Springer

Since the impressive works of Talagrand, concentration inequalities have been recognized as fundamental tools in several domains such as geometry of Banach spaces or random combinatorics. They also turn out to be essential tools to develop a non-asymptotic theory in statistics, exactly as the central limit theorem and large deviations are known to play a central part in the asymptotic theory. An overview of a non-asymptotic theory for model selection is given here and some selected applications to variable selection, change points detection and statistical learning are discussed. This volume reflects the content of the course given by P. Massart in St. Flour in 2003. It is mostly self-contained and accessible to graduate students. more...
