The book edition of Constitutions of the World from the late 18th Century to the middle of the 19th Century is the most complete and academically thorough collection of its kind. It contains constitutional documents from all over the world, written from 1776 to the end of the year 1849. This collection includes about 1,000 constitutions, human rights declarations, and draughts of constitutions that never came into force, from this period. These early constitutional documents were collected and examined in archives and libraries all over the world, as part of a project by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation). Using the original documents, experts from American and European universities reconstructed the authentic constitution texts for each country, and annotated them in their respective original languages. Each volume contains a short introduction, a main part with the edited constitution documents of a country, comments and an index. The unique value of the complete edition lies in its making all constitutions, from the early phase of modern constitutionalism, accessible in a reliable, authentic text version for the first time. These constitutions were widely scattered until now and, in many cases, unknown. In all, constitutional documents from about 50 countries in Europe and the Americas will be published in volumes for each country. Edward Carter Preston was a significant figure in Liverpool’s art scene from the First World War through to his death in 1965. In 1931 he received a commission from Sir Giles Gilbert Scott to prepare a major sculptural scheme for the City’s monumental Anglican Cathedral. Over the next thirty years Carter Preston made fifty sculptures, ten memorials and several reliefs for the Cathedral. Alongside his public achievements he pursued his personal artistic interests, sculpting on a more intimate scale, painting in watercolours, making prints and designing a range of ornamental and utilitarian objects. The Constitutional Documents of Austria, Hungary and Lichtenstein are now being published as Volume 2. This volume contains a collection of 39 of the most important constitutional documents of Austria, Hungary and Lichtenstein. The 22 Austrian constitutional texts of the years 1816 to 1849 were edited by the constitutional historian Ilse Reiter. They include the “Austrian constitution” (Verfassung von Österreich) from 1848 and the “Austrian patent of basic rights” (Grundrechtspatent von Österreich), published in 1849, in which real basic rights were granted for the first time, under the pressure of liberal public opinion, but at the same time were severely limited by vague definitions. In Hungary eleven constitutional documents were published in the period from 1791 to 1848. A strong liberal and national movement, directed against Austria, developed in the Kingdom of Hungary after 1806. This is reflected in the constitutional texts, in which Hungarian replaced Latin as the official language in the 1840s. The historian András Cieger edited the documents. Six constitutional texts and regulations are recorded from Liechtenstein, which had been part of the Deutscher Bund (German Union) since 1815. They were edited and annotated by the archivist and historian Paul Vogt. In this volume, a complete, authentic, annotated collection of historical constitutional texts is available for the first time to researchers, lecturers and students of history, political science, political philosophy, sociology and constitutional law.
