Finding Faith
By: Flory, Richard; Miller, Donald E.
Published by: Rutgers University Press
Despite the masses still lining up to enter mega-churches with warehouse-like architecture, casually dressed clergy, and pop Christian music, the Post-Boomer generationthose ranging in age from twenty to fortyis having second thoughts. In this perceptive look at the evolving face of Christianity in contemporary culture, sociologists Richard Flory and Donald E. Miller argue that we are on the verge of another potential revolution in how Christians worship and associate with one another. Just as the formative experiences of Baby Boomers were colored by such things as the war in Vietnam, the 1960s, and a dramatic increase in their opportunities for individual expression, so Post-Boomers have grown up in less structured households with working (often divorced) parents and exposure to multiple cultures and worldviews. These childhood experiences leave them questioning institutions and craving authentic spiritual experience, rather than entertainment. Flory and Miller develop a typology that captures four current approaches to the Christian faith and argue that this generation represents a new religious orientation of expressive communalism, in which they seek spiritual experience and fulfillment in community and through various expressive forms of spirituality, both private and public.

Focusing Partnerships
By: Plummer, Janelle (ed.)
Published by: Earthscan
Despite the increasing occurrence of policies aimed at mobilising the financial and human resources of the private sector most urban local governments responsible for urban basic services in the South do not have the capacity to initiate and sustain partnerships. Nor do they understand how they can create partnerships that target the poor. This sourcebook provides practical information and guidance to do so. With extensive illustrative material from Africa Asia and Latin America it sets out a strategic framework for building municipal capacity to create pro-poor partnerships. It focuses on implementation rather than policy. It locates private sector participation within the broader urban governance and poverty reduction agenda. And it is above all concerned to supply information on the issues and processes involved in making the public?private partnership (PPP) approach appropriate for service delivery in developing countries. The second in a series of capacity-building sourcebooks it will be invaluable for those concerned with the capacity of local levels of government: policy-makers municipal authorities development agencies and practitioners and all those involved in urban governance and poverty reduction.

From Red to Gray
By: Chawla, Mukesh
Published by: The World Bank
Conventional wisdom holds that aging populations are unfavorable for economic growth because of their potential impacts on labor supply, productivity, and savings. When this is coupled with the increased spending pressures because of pension requirements and health care, aging societies are likely to face serious fiscal problems. This report addresses these concerns in the unique context of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union where many countries are aging rapidly without the economic resources and institutional capacity of other aging societies in Western Europe and Japan.

Geographical Population Analysis
By: Maurer, Brian A.
Published by: Wiley-Blackwell
Conservation biology -- using concepts from traditional resource management and modern population biology to preserve biological diversity -- has emerged as one of the most important areas of ecology In order to really understand the problems of decreasing diversity and the solutions to maintaining it, the attention of ecologists must be focused on larger spatial and temporal scales than they are used to. The book discusses methods and statistical techniques that can be used to analyze spatial patterns in geographic populations. These techniques incorporate ideas from fractal geometry to develop measures of geographic range fragmentation, and can be used to ask questions regarding the conservation of biodiversity.
