Cliffs Notes: Ibsen's A Doll's House & Hedda Gabler
By: Sturman, Marianne
Published by: Cliffs Notes

With the uniqueness of absurd theater, these two plays explore the idea that happiness comes from being loved and that even a crime against society is not as important as a sin against love. Der mittelalterliche Tristan-Stoff in Skandinavien
By: Uecker, Heiko (ed.)
Published by: Walter de Gruyter

The tale of Tristan and Isolde is one of the great European love stories. Based on material from Celtic sagas, it was given literary form in all European vernaculars in the Middle Ages. In Northern Europe, a French version was translated into Old Norwegian in 1226; this is of great significance, as the French source text by Thomas de Bretagne has been nearly completely lost. The Old Norwegian Tristrams saga was the starting point for a series of re-workings of the material ? an independent Icelandic version together with numerous popular ballads from Denmark, Iceland and the Faroes. All of these texts are gathered here in translation ? some of them for the first time. more...

Die Karlamagnús-saga I Und Ihre Altfranzösische Vorlage
By: Beckmann, Gustav Adolf
Published by: Max Niemeyer Verlag

The 13th century  Old Norse Karlamagnús-Saga, a monumental biography of Charlemagne from translated and adapted French Caroline epics such as the Chanson de Roland, is a fascinating example of intensive reception at a distance. Its first branch appears to pre-empt the whole in a compressed form, and has thus been puzzling scholars for more than a century. This study is the first to illuminate the circumstances surrounding the genesis of its French model, and a running commentary allows the present-day reader to approach the text (even without a knowledge of Old Norse). more...

Norwegian Women's Writing 1850-1990
By: Garton, Janet
Published by: The Athlone Press

Volume One in a new series, this book covers Norwegian women's writing over the last 150 years, setting literary developments against the background of the emergence and growth of the women's movement in Norway. The work is divided chronologically into three sections: the period up to 1913, when the universal suffrage was granted; the period from 1913 to 1960, a time of stagnation in the women's movement, with little involvement in contemporary political, social and economic debates; and the period from 1960 to the present day, which has seen an increasing participation of women in public life. Chapters on individual authors concentrate on the images of the women portrayed and investigate the conflicts behind the text - the tensions between the authors and their work, and the ambivalent feelings of women authors towards the act of writing. The book should be of interest to all those concerned with women's writing and with Scandanavian literature and culture. The series provides a survey, country by country of women's writing from the beginnings of the major struggle for emancipation up to the present day. While the main emphasis is on literature, the social, political and cultural development of each country provides a context for understanding the position and preoccupations of women writers. Modern critical currents are also taken into account in relating feminist criticism to recent critical theory. Forthcoming volumes in this series include "Women's Writing in Italy 1870-1990" and "Swedish Women's Writing 1850-1990". more...
