Art of Twentieth-Century American Poetry
By: Altieri, Charles
Published by: Wiley-Blackwell
Written by a leading critic, this invigorating introduction to modernist American poetry conveys the excitement that can be generated by a careful reading of modernist poems. It encourages readers to confront the difficulties involved in tackling this literature and to identify with the modernists' sense of the revolutionary possibilities of their art. Altieri's account embraces four generations of American poets, tracing the ambitions, the disillusionments and the continuities of modernist poetry through to the 1980s. He describes how the sense of liberation created by early modernist formal experiments was followed by disappointment as the limitations of these discoveries emerged. He contends that, in response, poets such as Wallace Stevens and W. H. Auden reformulated modernist strategies to develop new ways for poetry to take social responsibility. Finally, he shows how these transformations were carried through by later poets such as Elizabeth Bishop, Robert Lowell, Adrienne Rich and Robert Creeley, with whom the narrative ends.

Ashes Are Bone and Dust
By: Battson, Jill
Published by: Insomniac Library
Jill Battson, whose first book of poems, Hard Candy, shook the poetry establishment by its well-starched neck, is back with a second breathtaking collection of lyric and elegiac poems. These are poems that are not afraid to name real people and real places, poems that revel in the relationships that make our lives, in the end, worth living. Ashes Are Bone and Dust maps the way through grief and recovery. The poems sensual, disturbing and probing document Battson's parents' death and the aftermath that loss leaves behind. They also address the process of recovery, pulling heavily on the journey for discovery both tangible and emotional.

Auguries of Innocence
By: Smith, Patti
Published by: Harper Collins
Auguries of Innocence is the first book of poetry from Patti Smith in more than a decade. It marks a major accomplishment from a poet and performer who has inscribed her vision of our world in powerful anthems, ballads, and lyrics. In this intimate and searing collection of poems, Smith joins in that great tradition of troubadours, journeymen, wordsmiths, and artists who respond to the world around them in fresh and original language. Her influences are eclectic and striking: Blake, Rimbaud, Picasso, Arbus, and Johnny Appleseed. Smith is an American original; her poems are oracles for our times.

The Augustan Art of Poetry
By: Sowerby, Robin
Published by: OUP Oxford
The first comparative study of its kind, The Augustan Art of Poetry uses translations to explore the artistic influence of the Roman poetry of the Augustan age upon English neoclassical poetry. The book foregrounds the artistry of central texts such as Dryden's translation of Virgil and Pope's Homer. Comparisons are also made with modern versions. - ;While previous studies have concentrated largely upon political concerns, The Augustan Art of Poetry is an exploration of the influence of the Roman Augustan aesthetic on English neo-classical poets of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. At the conclusion of his translation of Virgil, Dryden claims implicitly to have given English poetry the kind of refinement in language and style that Virgil had given the Latin. In this timely new study Robin Sowerby offers a strong. apologia for the fine artistry of the Augustans, concentrating in particular on the period's translations, a topic and method not hitherto ventured in any full-length comparative study. The mediation of the Augustan aesthetic is explored through the De Arte Poetica of Vida represented in the Augustan version. of Pitt, and its culmination is represented by examination of Dryden's Virgil in relation to predecessors. The effect of the Augustan aesthetic upon versions of silver Latin poets and upon Pope's Homer is also assessed and comparisons are drawn with modern translations. - ;Sowerby's performance is exemplary:his belief in the validity of an English Augustan aesthetic, and in the excellence of its best products, shines forth on every page of this earnest study. - James A. Winn, Translation and Literature;a stimulating book, richly crammed with matter...a major contribution to the study of literary translation. - John Talbot, Essays in Criticism; He has argued his case well. - Contemporary Review, Volume 288;...this is an important study of literary translations - Michael J. Franklin, MLR, 103.1

Augustine in Carthage
By: Porco, Alessandro
Published by: A Misfit Book
Equally crude and charming, locker-room macho and sensitive, these poems are always singularly marked by formal ingenuity and stylistic elan. A deeply felt and original collection, this work understands that (as its epigraph, in the words of Diderot, insists) "there is a bit of testicle at the bottom of our most sublime feelings and our purest tenderness."
