The Emergence of Everything: How the World Became Complex
By: Morowitz, Harold J.
Published by: Oxford University Press - USA

Framing the West argues that photography was intrinsic to British territorial expansion and settlement on the northwest coast. Williams shows how male and female settlers used photography to establish control over the territory and its indigenous inhabitants, as well as how native peoples eventually turned the technology to their own purposes. Photographs of the region were used to stimulate British immigration and entrepreneuralism, and imagies of babies and children were designed to advertise the population growth of the settlers. Although Indians were taken by Anglos to document their "disappearing" traditions and to show the success of missionary activities, many Indians proved receptive to photography and turned posing for the white man's camera to their own advantage. This book will appeal to those interested in the history of the West, imperialism, gender, photography, and First Nations/Native America.   more...

Entry Denied
By: Luibhéid, Eithne
Published by: University of Minnesota Press

Since the late nineteenth century, immigrant women’s sexuality has been viewed as a threat to national security, to be contained through strict border-monitoring practices. By scrutinizing this policy, its origins, and its application, Eithne Luibhéid shows how the U.S. border became a site not just for controlling female sexuality but also for contesting, constructing, and renegotiating sexual identity. more...

Ethnonational Identities
By: Fenton, Dr Steve; May, Dr Stephen
Published by: Palgrave

The prominence of ethnonational identities and movements is of increasing interest and concern in today's world. But the nature and importance of these identities remain ill understood. Ethnonational Identities breaks significant new ground by exploring the complex dimensions of ethnonational identity claims, their political mobilisation, and a wide variety of comparative contexts in which they are found. Including case studies from the Québécois to the Mäori and from Kashmiri nationalism to interethnic competition in the Caribbean, it should be read by all those with an interest or involvement in the fields of ethnicity, nationalism and identity politics. more...

For Better or For Worse
By: Thai, Hung Cam
Published by: Rutgers University Press

Marriage is currently the number-one reason people migrate to the United States, and women constitute the majority of newcomers joining husbands who already reside here. But little is known about these marriage and migration streams beyond the highly publicized and often sensationalized phenomena of mail-order and military brides. Less commonly known is that most international couples are immigrants of the same ethnicity. In For Better or For Worse, Hung Cam Thai takes a closer look at marriage and migration, with a specific focus on the unions between Vietnamese men living in the United States and the women who marry them. Weaving together a series of personal stories, he underscores the ironies and challenges that these unions face. He includes the voices of working-class immigrant men speaking about wanting “traditional” wives and young Vietnamese college-educated women, who express a preference for men of the same ethnicity but with a more liberal outlook on gender—men they imagine they will find in the United States. Thai captures the incompatible viewpoints of the couples who appear to be separated not only geographically but ideologically. more...
