Active Control of Vibration
By: Fuller, Christopher C.; Elliott, S. J.; Nelson, P. A.
Published by: Academic Press (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)

Glaciotectonism is an important component of modern glacial theory, gaining widespread recognition within the past 25 years. This book is outcome of compiling maps of glaciotectonic structures and landforms for North America and central Europe, which is the basis for better understanding the role of glaciotectonism as a key component of glacial theory. Glaciotectonism is intented to provide a comprehensive review and description of glaciotectonic phenomena. The subject matter is arranged in three broad sections. First, definitions, principles, and methodologies of glaciotectonics in the field as well as in the laboratory are described. Next, case histories of glaciotectonic structures and landforms from the land and continental shelf regions of North America and Eurasia are then covered in detail. Practical applications for mining, highway construction, and other human activities are also described. The last part of the book covers regional and continental distribution of glaciotectonic phenomena, dynamics of glaciotectonic deformation, and analogous non-glacial deformation. more...

Adaptive Structures
By: Wagg, David (ed.); Bond, Ian (ed.); Weaver, Paul (ed.)
Published by: John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. (UK)

Adaptive structures have the ability to adapt, evolve or change their properties or behaviour in response to the environment around them. The analysis and design of adaptive structures requires a highly multi-disciplinary approach which includes elements of  structures, materials, dynamics, control, design and inspiration taken from biological systems. Development of adaptive structures has been taking place in a wide range of industrial applications, but is particularly advanced in the aerospace and space technology sector with morphing wings, deployable space structures; piezoelectric devices and vibration control of tall buildings. Bringing together some of the foremost world experts in adaptive structures, this unique text:.:.;. includes discussions of the application of adaptive structures in the aerospace, military, civil engineering structures, automotive and MEMS.;. presents the impact of biological inspiration in designing adaptive structures, particularly the use of hierarchy in nature, which typically induces multi-functional behavior.;. sets the agenda for future research in adaptive structures in one distinctive single volume. Adaptive Structures: Engineering Applications is essential reading for engineers and scientists working in the fields of intelligent materials, structural vibration, control and related smart technologies. It will also be of interest to senior undergraduate and postgraduate research students as well as design engineers working in the aerospace, mechanical, electrical and civil engineering sectors. more...

Advances in the Bonded Composite Repair of Metallic Aircraft Structure
By: Jones, R.; Baker, A. (ed.); Rose, F. (ed.)
Published by: Elsevier Science

The availability of efficient and cost-effective technologies to repair or extend the life of aging military airframes is becoming a critical requirement in most countries around the world, as new aircraft becoming prohibitively expensive and defence budgets shrink. To a lesser extent a similar situation is arising with civil aircraft, with falling revenues and the high cost of replacement aircraft. This book looks at repair/reinforcement technology, which is based on the use of adhesively bonded fibre composite patches or doublers and can provide cost-effective life extension in many situations. From the scientific and engineering viewpoint, whilst simple in concept, this technology can be quite challenging particularly when used to repair primary structure. This is due to it being based on interrelated inputs from the fields of aircraft design, solid mechanics, fibre composites, structural adhesive bonding, fracture mechanics and metal fatigue. The technologies of non-destructive inspection (NDI) and, more recently smart materials, are also included. Operational issues are equally critical, including airworthiness certification, application technology (including health and safety issues), and training. Including contributions from leading experts in Canada, UK, USA and Australia, this book discusses most of these issues and the latest developments. Most importantly, it contains real histories of application of this technology to both military and civil aircraft. more...

Aerodynamic Design of Transport Aircraft
By: Obert, E.
Published by: IOS Press

After the demise of Fokker in 1996 one feared that interest in aeronautical engineering would strongly diminish. Two years later the situation was re-appraised, and the interest in aeronautical engineering remained, so the course was reinstated. This title includes the author's lecture notes from these courses. more...

Aerodynamics for Engineering Students
By: Houghton, E. L.; Carpenter, P. W.; Houghton, E.L.
Published by: Butterworth-Heinemann (Elsevier Science & Technology Books)

Already established as the leading course text on aerodynamics, Aerodynamics for Engineering Students has been revised to include the latest developments in flow control and boundary layers, and their influence on modern wing design, as well as introducing recent advances in the understanding of fundamental fluid dynamics. Computational methods have been expanded and updated to reflect the modern approaches to aerodynamic design and research in the aeronautical industry and elsewhere, and the structure of the text has been developed to reflect current course requirements. The book is designed to be accessible and practical. Theory is developed logically within each chapter with notation, symbols and units well defined throughout, and the text is fully illustrated with worked examples and exercises. more...

Aerodynamics of Wind Turbines
By: Hansen, Martin O. L.
Published by: Earthscan

‘An excellent introduction to wind turbine aerodynamics.’ David Infield Professor of Renewable Energy Systems Loughborough University UK ‘A well written up to date and comprehensive textbook ... I would strongly recommend it.’ Spyros Voutsinas Associate Professor National Technical University of Athens Greece ‘An excellent overview of the aerodynamics of modern wind turbines ... Highly recommended for practitioners as well as theorists.’ Professor Geir Moe Department of Civil and Transportation Engineering The Norwegian University of Science and Technology Norway ‘...everything you need to know about wind generation ...’ Seda Newsletter Aerodynamics of Wind Turbines is the established essential text for the fundamental solutions to efficient wind turbine design. Now in its second edition it has been entirely updated and substantially extended to reflect advances in technology research into rotor aerodynamics and the structural response of the wind turbine structure. Topics covered include increasing mass flow through the turbine performance at low and high wind speeds assessment of the extreme conditions under which the turbine will perform and the theory for calculating the lifetime of the turbine. The classical Blade Element Momentum method is also covered as are eigenmodes and the dynamic behaviour of a turbine. The new material includes a description of the effects of the dynamics and how this can be modelled in an ‘aeroelastic code’ which is widely used in the design and verification of modern wind turbines. Further the description of how to calculate the vibration of the whole construction as well as the time varying loads has been substantially updated. more...
