The Politics of Same-Sex Marriage
By: Rimmerman, Craig A. (ed.); Wilcox, Clyde (ed.)
Published by: The University of Chicago Press
Same-sex marriage emerged in 2004 as one of the hottest issues of the campaign season. But in a severe blow to gay rights advocates, all eleven states that had the issue on the ballot passed amendments banning the practice, and the subject soon dropped off the medias radar. This pattern of waxing and waning in the public eye has characterized the debate over same-sex marriage since 1996 and the passing of the Defense of Marriage Act. Since then, court rulings and local legislatures have kept the issue alive in the political sphere, and conservatives and gay rights advocates have made the issue a key battlefield in the culture wars. The Politics of Same-Sex Marriage brings together an esteemed list of. scholars to explore all facets of this heated issue, including the ideologies and. strategies on both sides of the argument, the publics response, the use of the issue. in political campaigns, and how same-sex marriage fits into the broad context of. policy cycles and windows of political opportunity. With comprehensive coverage. from a variety of different approaches, this volume will be a vital sourcebook for. activists, politicians, and scholars alike.

African Intimacies
By: Hoad, Neville
Published by: University of Minnesota Press
There have been few book-length engagements with the question of sexuality in Africa, let alone African homosexuality. African Intimacies simultaneously responds to the public debate on the ÒAfricannessÓ of homosexuality and interrogates the meaningfulness of the terms ÒsexualityÓ and ÒhomosexualityÓ outside Euro-American discourse. Speculating on cultural practices interpreted by missionaries as sodomy and resistance to colonialism, Neville Hoad begins by analyzing the 1886 Bugandan martyrs incidentÑthe execution of thirty men in the royal court. Then, in a series of close readings, he addresses questions of race, sex, and globalization in the 1965 Wole Soyinka novel The Interpreters, examines the emblematic 1998 Lambeth conference of Anglican bishops, considers the imperial legacy in depictions of the HIV/AIDS crisis, and reveals how South African writer Phaswane MpeÕs contemporary novel Welcome to Our Hillbrow problematizes notions of African identity and cosmopolitanism. HoadÕs assessment of the historical valence of homosexuality in Africa shows how the category has served a key role in a larger story, one in which sexuality has been made in line with a vision of white Western truth, limiting an understanding of intimacy that could imagine an African universalism.

A FRANK, FUNNY, EXPLICIT, AND INSPIRING MEMOIR ABOUT HOW DANCING NAKED IN GAY CLUBS IN THE NATION'S CAPITAL HELPED A COLLEGE PROFESSOR DISCOVER HIS TRUE SELF. I felt that I'd made a transformation as surely as Superman slipping out of a phone booth or Wonder Woman doing a sunburst spin. I was bare-ass in a room of paying strangers, a stripper. After years of wondering what it would be like, I had done it -- faced a fear, defied expectation, embraced a taboo self. It was only the beginning....

The Antigay Agenda
By: Herman, Didi
Published by: The University of Chicago Press
In The Antigay Agenda, Didi Herman probes the values, beliefs, and rhetoric of the organizations of the Christian Right. Tracing the emergence of their antigay agenda, Herman explores how and why these groups made antigay activity a top priority, and how it relates to their political history. "A penetrating analysis of the Christian Right's antigay agenda and of how that agenda is derived from the Christian Right's peculiar vision of American history and the Christian faith."Rev. Peter J. Gomes, Boston Book Review. "Public intellectualism at its best. . . . A comprehensive summary of the conservative Protestant worldview."Michael Joseph Gross, Boston Phoenix Literary Section. "Presents considerable information not previously part of the nation's political discourse. . . . [Herman] dissects the Christian Right's antigay stance dispassionately giving, as it were, the devil his due. For anyone on either side of this passionate and important conflict, that is an impressive accomplishment."Hastings Wyman, Jr., Washington Post Book World.
