Adolescents and War
By: Barber, Brian K
Published by: OUP Oxford
Hundreds of thousands of children are forced or legally recruited combatants in no fewer than 70 warring parties across the world. In addition to these child soldiers, thousands of youth voluntarily participate in politically related conflict. Why, how, and in what capacities are such large numbers of teenagers involved in war and how are they affected? Adolescents and War brings together world experts in an evidence-based volume to thoroughly understand and document the intricacies of youth who have had substantial involvement in political violence. Contributors argue that the assumption that youth are automatically debilitated by the violence they experience is much too simplistic: effective care for youth must include an awareness of their motives and beliefs, the roles they played in the conflict, their relationships with others, and the opportunities available to them after their experiences with war. The book suggests that the meaning youth make of a conflict may protect them from mental harm. For example, Palestinian teens who were actively engaged in the first Intifada have fared better than Bosnian teens who were virtual sitting ducks to the sniper and grenade launches of the hidden forces during the siege of Sarajevo. Covering youth involvement in conflicts in Afghanistan, Angola, Sierra Leone, Mozambique, Northern Ireland, Israel/Palestine, and Bosnia, the volume will be of interest to psychologists, sociologists, and political scientists and should be adopted for courses in social psychology, crisis intervention, and international conflict.

Aftermaths
By: Bullock, Marcus (ed.); Paik, Peter Y. (ed.)
Published by: Rutgers University Press
Aftermaths offers compelling new ideas on exile, migration, and diaspora. Ten contributors-well-established scholars and promising new voices-working in different disciplines and drawing from diverse backgrounds present rich case studies from around the world. Seeking fresh perspectives on the movement of people and ideas, the essays take on a wide range of subjects such as the influence of religion upon diasporic consciousness, the conflict between the local and the transnational, the fate of historical tragedy in globalization, the reinvention of social bonds across migrations, and the agonistic dimensions of intercultural dialogue. Marcus Bullock and Peter Y. Paik show we have reached a moment in history when it is imperative to question prevailing intellectual models. The contributors argue that the interconnectedness of world economies can exacerbate existing antagonisms or generate new exclusions. Aftermaths engages with important academic topics as well as leading political issues of the day.

Aging in the United States and Japan
By: Noguchi, Yukio (ed.); Wise, David (ed.)
Published by: The University of Chicago Press
Japanese and American economists assess the present economic status of the elderly in the United States and Japan, and consider the impact of an aging population on the economies of the two countries. With essays on labor force participation and retirement, housing equity and the economic status of the elderly, budget implications of an aging population, and financing social security and health care in the 1990s, this volume covers a broad spectrum of issues related to the economics of aging. Among the book's findings are that workers are retiring at an increasingly earlier age in both countries and that, as the populations age, baby boomers in the United States will face diminishing financial resources as the ratio of retirees to workers sharply increases. The result of a joint venture between the National Bureau of Economic Research and the Japan Center for Economic Research, this book complements Housing Markets in the United States and Japan (1994) by integrating research on housing markets with economic issues of the aged in the United States and Japan.
