Codes For Error Detection
By: Kløve, Torleiv
Published by: World Scientific

There are two basic methods of error control for communication, both involving coding of the messages. With forward error correction, the codes are used to detect and correct errors. In a repeat request system, the codes are used to detect errors and, if there are errors, request a retransmission. Error detection is usually much simpler to implement than error correction and is widely used. However, it is given a very cursory treatment in almost all textbooks on coding theory. Only a few older books are devoted to error detecting codes. This book begins with a short introduction to the theory of block codes with emphasis on the parts important for error detection. The weight distribution is particularly important for this application and is treated in more detail than in most books on error correction. A detailed account of the known results on the probability of undetected error on the q-ary symmetric channel is also given. more...

Coding Theory And Cryptology
By: Niederreiter, H
Published by: World Scientific

The inaugural research program of the Institute for Mathematical Sciences at the National University of Singapore took place from July to December 2001 and was devoted to coding theory and cryptology. As part of the program, tutorials for graduate students and junior researchers were given by world-renowned scholars. These tutorials covered fundamental aspects of coding theory and cryptology and were designed to prepare for original research in these areas. The present volume collects the expanded lecture notes of these tutorials. more...

Collective Dynamics of Nonlinear and Disordered Systems
By: Radons, G. (ed.); Just, W. (ed.); Häussler, P. (ed.)
Published by: Springer

Phase transitions in disordered systems and related dynamical phenomena are a topic of intrinsically high interest in theoretical and experimental physics. This book presents a unified view, adopting concepts from each of the disjoint fields of disordered systems and nonlinear dynamics. Special attention is paid to the glass transition, from both experimental and theoretical viewpoints, to modern concepts of pattern formation, and to the application of the concepts of dynamical systems for understanding equilibrium and nonequilibrium properties of fluids and solids. The content is accessible to graduate students, but will also be of benefit to specialists, since the presentation extends as far as the topics of ongoing research work. more...

Communicating at the End of Life
By: Foster, Elissa
Published by: Routledge

This enlightening volume provides first-hand perspectives and ethnographic research on communication at the end of life, a topic that has gone largely understudied in communication literature. Author Elissa Foster’s own experiences as a volunteer hospice caregiver form the basis of the book. Communicating at the End of Life recounts the stories of Foster and six other volunteers and their communicative experiences with dying patients, using communication theory and research findings to identify insights on the relationships they form throughout the process. What unfolds is a scholarly examination of a subject that is significant to every individual at some point in the life process. more...
