Canon and Exegesis
By: Lyons, William John
Published by: Sheffield Academic Press

Previous attempts to critique the canonical approach of Brevard Childs have remained largely theoretical in nature. One of the weakness of canonical criticism, then, is its failure to have generated new readings of extended biblical passages. Reviewing the hermeneutics and the praxis of Childs' approach, Lyons then turns to the Sodom narrative (Gen 18-19) as a test of a practical exegesis according to Childs' principles, and then to reflect critically upon the reading experience generated. Surprisingly, the canonical reading produced is a wholly new one, centred around the complex, irreducible-even contradictory-request of Abraham for Yahweh to do justice (18:23-25). more...

Parts I and II deal with the philosophical paradigms that are at the root of Peirce's new theory of signs, pragmatic and social. Part III is devoted to comparing Peirce's theory of semiotics as a form of logic to the work of other philosophers. Part IV compares Peirce's 'scientific metaphysics' with European Metaphysics. more...

Charlotte Brontë
By: Glen, Heather
Published by: OUP Oxford

This stimulating study considers how Charlotte Bront--euml--;'s writings engage with a whole range of issues in their time. Through a series of new readings of ostensibly well-known texts, Heather Glen reveals a Charlotte Bront--euml--; more alert to her historical moment and far more aesthetically sophisticated than she has usually been taken to be. - ;This stimulating study of Charlotte Bront--euml--;'s novels draws on extensive original research in a range of early Victorian writings, on subjects ranging from women's day-dreaming to sanitary reform, from the Great Exhibition to early Victorian religious thought. It is not, however, merely a study of context. Through a close consideration of the ways in which Bront--euml--;'s novels engage with the thinking of their time, it offers a powerful argument for the 'literary' as a. distinctive mode of intelligence, and reveals a Charlotte Bront--euml--; more alert to her historical moment and far more aesthetically sophisticated than she has usually been taken to be. The study will be of interest not only to students of Victorian literature and society, but also to those literary critics and theorists who. are beginning to reconsider the nature of the aesthetic and its relation to ideology. - ;Her scholarship is impressive. . . . Provides an immensely valuable record of what nineteenth-century English readers were thinking, and reminds us that Charlotte Bront--euml--; was one of them. . . . will become an indispensable resource for students of the Bront--euml--;s and nineteenth-century culture. Glen shows us how, exactly, Bront--euml--;'s novels are topical, and a picture of the age in which she lived and wrote emerges that is richer and more detailed than any we have previously. had. - Janet Gezari, Essays in Criticism;... the book is a treasure trove, with a tendency to dazzle and bewilder. Readers who would like an occasional look at the map will just have to be content to expect the unexp more...
