Helping Ourselves - Community Responses to AIDS in Swaziland
By: World Health Organization
Published by: UNAIDS
The Kingdom of Swaziland now has the highest recorded HIV prevalence in the world, and this southern African country faces enormous challenges, particularly when it comes to looking after the thousands of children orphaned by the epidemic. However, much inspirational work is being done at community level to put in place structures and programmes to stem the flow of infections and mitigate the impact. Some of these programmes are new, but others are based on old, traditional Swazi ways of doing things, that are now being revived and strengthened. This best practice document reports on the work being accomplished.

HIV, Resurgent Infections and Population Change in Africa
By: Carael, Michel (ed.); Glynn, Judith (ed.)
Published by: Springer
Forty years ago, the age-old battle against infectious diseases as a major threat to human health was believed close to being won. However, by the late twentieth century, the increase of emerging and reemerging infectious diseases was evident in both low and high income countries. About 30 new infectious diseases have been identified in the last 20 years. Among the ?new? diseases, and most importantly, the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) epidemic, with 40 million persons infected and 25 million deaths since its first description, presents one of the most significant health, societal and security challenges facing the global community. The interaction of HIV/AIDS with tuberculosis, malaria and bacterial infections have increased HIV-related morbidity and mortality, and in turn, the HIV pandemic has brought about devastating increases in tuberculosis. Understanding the population impact and the dynamics of infection diseases in the most affected region is critical to efforts to reduce the morbidity and mortality of such infections, and for decisions on where to use limited resources in the fight against infections. This book aims to contribute to these efforts by offering a demographic and epidemiological perspective on emerging and reemerging infections in sub-Saharan Africa.

HIV/AIDS Counselling, Just a Phone Call Away
By: UNAIDS
Published by: UNAIDS
Around the world, telephone helplines have proved to be an accessible, affordable and acceptable source of HIV/AIDS information, counselling and referrals for callers from all walks of life. First initiated in high-income countries, helplines have expanded into many low- and middle-income countries, particularly as the latter improve their telecommunications infrastructure and identify HIV/AIDS as a pressing social concern. This Best Practice Case Study offers an opportunity to learn from the experiences of well-established helplines in India, the Philippines, South Africa, and Trinidad and Tobago. These initiatives demonstrate the principles that have made helplines globally successful, outlining the challenges facing helplines and creative approaches to meeting those challenges.

HIV/AIDS in Europe
By: Matic, Srdan; Lazarus, Jeffrey; Donoghoe, Martin
Published by: World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe
In Europe today, HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care are needed more than ever. HIV incidence steady in western and central Europe, and dramatically increasing in eastern Europe remains a major challenge to public health in the 21st century. With more than two million people living with HIV/AIDS in the WHO European Region, no country has been spared. This book tells the story of HIV/AIDS in Europe from a broad variety of perspectives: biomedical, social, cultural, economic and political. The authors are leading experts from across the Region and include both the infected and the affected, be they doctors or former drug users, United Nations employees or gay men, public health researchers or community activists. They describe how, from the first documented cases in 1981 to the present era of antiretroviral management, controlling the human immunodeficiency virus in Europe has proven elusive. Yet while antiretroviral therapy lets many HIV-positive Europeans lead normal lives, the vast majority of the Region s infected residents continue to face the disease unarmed. This volume not only analyses the past and surveys the present, but suggests how to move towards two fundamental goals: providing universal access to treatment and halting the spread of HIV/AIDS.
