Living Alongside a Child's Recovery
By: Pughe, Billy; Philpot, Terry
Published by: Jessica Kingsley Publishers
Conventional parenting is not adequate to address the needs of children whose emotional development has been frozen, distorted or interrupted as a result of trauma. Therapeutic parenting is a psychodynamic model of parenting tailored for traumatized children, providing a safe, secure environment in which the traumatized child will have the best opportunity to recover. Living Alongside a Child's Recovery asserts that a good understanding of child development and attachment theory is essential to effective therapeutic parenting of a traumatized child, and the book details the roots of trauma as well as the impact this has on a child's ability to maintain normal family bonds, whether with birth parents, foster parents or with staff in a residential setting. It also explains the practicalities of carrying out effective therapeutic parenting, including how to design a therapeutic physical environment, the importance of routine and security, how to approach issues of hygiene and organizing mealtimes. The authors examine individual and group work settings, and also explore transitions; how to manage a child's move to a permanent placement while at the same time ensuring that their needs are prioritized. This book forms part of SACCS' integrated approach and is an ideal accompaniment to The Child's Own Story: Life Story Work with Traumatized Children by Richard Rose and Terry Philpot and Reaching the Vulnerable Child: Therapy With Traumatized Children by Janie Rymaszewska and Terry Philpot, both of which also feature in the Delivering Recovery series.

Lost for Words
By: Dance, Ruth; MacManus, Nic; Stitt, Carole
Published by: Jessica Kingsley Publishers
Lost for Words is an innovative 'loss awareness' training package designed for teach-ers and carers supporting children who are experiencing bereavement, be it through death or any other kind of loss. Developed from collaborative multi-agency and multi-professional work with psychologists, educationalists, social workers and nurses, this package is designed for use by trainers over the course of a day, or over several days. It offers trainers and course delegates crucial guidance, soundly underpinned by research carried out with bereaved children and their parents, in schools, and by the 'Iceberg' project at the University of York. Divided into fundamental 'stand-alone' topics, from children's understanding of death and death as taboo to changes in learning and behaviour, these topic areas can be taught separately or together as required. The training is intended to be interactive and includes many group activities. All the required resources are included with the pack, including templates for OHP transparencies, hand-outs for trainees and a bibliography for further reading. This much-needed training package is an essential resource for teachers, social work-ers, psychologists and all those caring for and working with children.

Love and Grief
By: O'Neill, Catherine; Keane, Lisa
Published by: Jessica Kingsley Publishers
'Life consists of a series of events. Some appear to be pre-ordained and some are unpredictable... A curiously simple, yet complex twist of fate...prompted [the authors] to seek out some of the most fundamental human questions; questions about the meaning of existence and its ultimate demise, about the nature of love, in all its presentations and disguises...and ultimately, what can be gained (if anything) through ''loss''. In...Love and Grief, [the authors] boldly step into a labyrinth of spiritual and emotional paradoxes, guiding us alongside [some] intensely personal journeys.'. - Annie Lennox, Solo singer songwriter. 'What is it like when a partner dies? How can you cope after such a bereavement? Love and Grief is a book that is long overdue - it tackles the topic with compassion and insight and will be helpful both to bereaved partners and those who support them.'. - Susan Quilliam, Relationship Psychologist and Agony Aunt. 'An honest and compassionate guide to the complex issues surrounding love after loss. It includes courageous personal accounts which offer insight into the often taboo subject of forming new intimate relationships following bereavement and will be of great comfort.'. - Jackie Spreckley, Cruse Bereavement Care counsellor. 'I feel this book fills an important gap in the literature of bereavement. Looking bravely at the often taboo topic of intimacy after bereavement, the authors capture the confusion of enjoying a new relationship while still feeling grief and even guilt. As this book draws on a wide variety of personal experiences, I believe that it will be of great value to the many who find themselves in this situation. They will realise they are not alone.'. - Denise Brady, St Christopher's Hospice. Love and Grief offers sympathetic support to adults who have lost a partner, helping them to explore the difficult and often painful process of forming new relationships. Through a wide range of personal accounts and poems, the authors show how

Making of a Counsellor
By: Noonan, Ellen; Spurling, Laurence
Published by: Routledge
In The Making of a Counsellor case studies illustrate work done with 'impossible' clients; other essays about orphans and debtors, accountancy trainees and expatriate employees explore new ways of thinking about these groups of people. More traditional, perhaps, are essays about work with neurological patients, adolescent youth club members, traumatised families, and the chronically mentally ill. Each essay breaks fresh ground in understanding the complexity of the problems and the richness of the counselling relationship. In vivid narrative, The Making of a Counsellor conveys the experience of thinking and working as a counsellor. The original and thoughtful essays make this an invaluable source of ideas and techniques.

Media at War
By: Tumber, H.; Palmer, J.
Published by: Sage Publications, Ltd (UK)
The Iraq war provoked widespread public debate, and media coverage of the events have also been the subject of scrutiny. Embedded reporters, 24-hour news and 'live on the spot' reports have had a huge impact on the news we receive. Media at War offers a critical overview of the war coverage, and provides a context for examining questions that emerged about the role of journalists: What experience, training and protection do war reporters have? What is the relationship between journalists and their sources? Are embedded journalists able to deliver balanced news coverage?
