Agri-culture
By: Pretty, Jules
Published by: Earthscan
'Refreshingly fluent narrative brimming full of stories and metaphors' Tim O'Riordan University of East Anglia UK 'A great balance between storytelling and analysis which points to the critical need for gaining control over resources' Jacqueline Ashby CIAT Colombia 'Full of supporting evidence and clear arguments' Norman Uphoff Cornell University US 'A wonderful book put together with such vision and passion' Mark Ritchie Institute of Agriculture and Trade Policy US 'A superb volume. This is a valuable monograph that all policy-makers scholars and farmers must read to understand their roles and responsibilities' Vo-Tong Xuan Angiang University Vietnam 'Beautifully written. The implications of the book's ideas are deep and extensive' Julia Guivant University of Florianopolis Brazil Something is wrong with our agricultural and food systems. Despite great progress in increasing productivity in recent decades hundreds of millions of people remain hungry and malnourished and further millions suffer for eating too much food or the wrong sort. Agri-Culture envisages the expansion of a new form of food production and consumption founded on more ecological principles and in harmony with the cultures knowledges and collective capacities of the producers themselves. It draws on many stories of successful agricultural transformation in developing and industrialized countries but with a warning that true prosperity will depend on the radical reform of the institutions and policies that control global food futures and fundamental changes in the way we think. The time has come for the next agricultural revolution.

Agribusiness and Innovation Systems in Africa
By: Larsen, Kurt (ed.)
Published by: The World Bank
This book examines how agricultural innovation arises in four African countries Ghana, Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda through the lens of agribusiness, public policies, and specific value chains for food staples, high value products, and livestock. Determinants of innovation are not viewed individually but within the context of a complex agricultural innovation system involving many actors and interactions. The volume is based on qualitative interviews with agribusiness representatives that were designed to shed light on their experiences on public policies that either enhances or impedes innovation in Africas agriculture sector.Following are the volume's main messages on policies, institutions and strategies that nurture innovation in the agriculture sector: 1) agribusiness innovation is in many cases driven by the need to maintain grades and standards within the value chain, not only in the case of export markets, but also in evolving domestic and urban markets and value chains; 2) that staple food sector has potential to be a source of growth, innovation and poverty reduction; 3) successes in value chain innovation and agribusiness production depend critically on the structure of the whole agricultural innovation system and are highly context specific; 4) especially successful innovation were dependent on creating synergies between market-based and knowledge-based interactions and strong linkages within and beyond the value chain; and 5) the public sectors innovation support has to extend to interactions, collective action and broader public-private partnership programs. This book will be of interest to policymakers, agribusiness leaders, farmer organizations, NGOs, and researchers.

Agribusiness and Society
By: Jansen, Kees (ed.); Vellema, Sietze (ed.)
Published by: Zed Books
This volume examines how far agribusiness corporations are responding to the opportunities and pressures resulting from emerging environmental awareness. In particular, in what ways are they changing their R & D and business practices in order to develop new environmentally oriented products, services and methods of production? These questions are explored through investigations of particular biotech and agribusiness companies -- including Monsanto, Ciba Geigy, Dole, and Chiquita -- and their behaviour in situations as diverse as California, Europe, Australia, Brazil, and Central America. The book explains why some corporations are successful in introducing environmentally friendly innovations, and others are not. The result is a sophisticated and critical analysis of business practices and regulatory systems in the agro-food sector.
